Summary:

A boxer with a good left-right combination can often batter an opponent into submission. For the Yalesville Little League all-star team, the combination resulted in a state championship.

Led by the stellar pitching of lefty Donny White and right-hander Jeff Piscitelli, Yalesville swept a pair of games from Section 2 champion Waterford South in the Connecticut state championship series at Orange. White fired a two-hitter in the opener, as Yalesville raced to a 7-0 second inning lead en route to a 11-4 win. Piscitelli then held Waterford to only one hit in Yalesville's 6-0 tournament-clinching win.

The wins boosted Yalesville's record to 12-0 in Connecticut tournament play, and earned the league its first ever state title. Yalesville had last won a District 5 title in 1968.

White benefitted from an early offensive push in the state tournament opener. Mike Cullis scored on a wild pitch, and Piscitelli laced a two-run single as Yalesville opened a 3-0 lead before Waterford South came to bat.

In the second, Yalesville extended the lead. Cullis dropped a one-out triple down the right-field line, and scored on Dan Hyatt's single. Mike Goodrich was hit by a pitch, and after Piscitelli lined out, White put the game out of reach with a three-run home run to center field.

The 7-0 lead was more than enough for White. The left-hander struck out twelve, and held Waterford to two hits, including Phil McCormick's two-run homer to right in the second. Yalesville sealed the victory when a pair of bases-loaded walks contributed to a four run rally in the top of the sixth inning.

After having little luck against White in the opener, Waterford South faced an uphill struggle against Piscitelli, Yalesville's ace. Piscitelli threw three no-hitters in five tournament starts coming into the state tournament, and was fresh off of a 3-2 win over Trumbull American in the Section 1 championship game. Against Waterford South, he continued his tournament dominance with a twelve strikeout, one-hit performance as Yalesville pulled away late for a 6-0 championship game win.

Piscitelli started slowly in the second state tournament game. He allowed four walks in the first three innings, but settled down to retire twelve of the last fourteen batters he faced. Relying on a fastball that was clocked in the mid-70s throughout the game, Piscitelli allowed only a hit batter and Ben Farina's line single up the middle in the fifth inning during the latter part of the game.

Yalesville's offense also started slowly against Waterford starter Tim Murphy. Cullis' RBI single in the third scored Mike McCarthy with the game's first run, and the score remained 1-0 until the Wallingford club added five more in the bottom of the fifth.

Marc Conlon opened the fifth inning rally by drawing a walk, and McCarthy's single and Mike Cunniff's walk loaded the bases. Cullis and Hyatt added RBI singles to widen the lead to 3-0, and Piscitelli's two-out fly ball was misplayed by the Waterford right fielder. With the baserunners moving on contact, three runs scored, and Yalesville had the game well in hand.

Yalesville breezed to a 4-0 record in pool competition at the New England Region Tournament in nearby Bristol, CT, before dropping a 3-0 decision to South Burlington (Vermont) in the semifinal round.
