Summary:

Pitchers Mike Nich and Nick Shanley allowed only four hits over two games as Orange swept Montville National 4-1 and 9-1 to win the 2002 Connecticut State Little League championship at Cytec Field in Wallingford.

Nich relied on an array of curveballs and changeups to keep Montville National in check in the opener. Nich allowed only a pair of hits, while striking out ten and walking two.

"The high curve just killed us," said Montville manager Rick Lewis.

Orange broke the first game open with a pair of third inning extra base hits that keyed a three run rally. Nick Ferris laced an 0-2 pitch into the left center field gap for an RBI double, and Chris Migani later tripled down the right field line to give Orange a 3-0 lead.

Orange added a run in the top of the sixth when Ferris drew a bases-loaded walk.

Montville finally broke through in the bottom of the inning when Kyle Orzechowski's fielder's choice scored Matt Forman.

The next evening, Shanley and Montville pitcher Taylor Lewis were locked in a tight pitching duel until Orange capitalized on three Montville errors to score seven times in the sixth inning.

Lewis carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, and Montville held a 1-0 lead thanks to Orzechowski's fourth inning home run. Orange tied the game in the fifth on Greg Mangano's leadoff home run to right center field, and took the lead later in the inning when Chris Peterson's sacrifice fly plated pinch runner Tom Cornell.

The next inning, Orange capitalized on Montville mistakes to break the game open. Migani and Mangano both scored when the ball came loose as Montville's shortstop attempted to corral a bloop to short left field off the bat of Chadd Sollo. Tim Stuart delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-1, and second baseman Stephen Maier added a two-run double to the right field fence.

"This was like a 2-1 game, and the score doesn't reflect it," said Orange manager David Migani after the game. "We played great defense and started to wear the other team down like we always do. It just began to unravel for them."

Shanley kept Montville in check throughout, striking out six and throwing a two-hitter in only his second start since the beginning of district tournament play. His teammates backed him up defensively with their second consecutive errorless game.

"We ran out of gas and the errors killed us," said Lewis. "We played well, but all tournament we had no offense. We couldn't put the hits together and eventually it was going to catch up to us."

Orange, which won its first state title since 1972, advanced to the New England Region tournament in Bristol, Connecticut. The local team reached the semifinal round before falling 1-0 to Portsmouth (Rhode Island) Little League.
