Summary:

Brody Sapp and Alex Ruiz both homered, and M-O-T Little League led from wire-to-wire in a 6-2 victory over Newark American Little League in the Delaware state championship game at Smyrna-Clayton Little League's field.

Sapp's first inning home run gave M-O-T a 2-0 lead before Newark American first came to the plate. M-O-T later extended its lead to 4-0, but Newark American halved the lead when Zack Czarnecki led off the fifth inning with a single and Brett Lesher followed with a home run.

Ruiz quickly answered the blast, as he followed Blake Harbert's leadoff walk by lining a pitch over the left field fence to stretch M-O-T's lead to 6-2.

"I was a little anxious (after Lesher's home run)," said M-O-T manager Mike Salony. "But I knew as long as we kept the tying run from coming to the plate, we were in good shape. We did that. We got the next three guys out."

After the home run, pitcher Connor Wooten recorded a strikeout, induced a comebacker, and then ended the inning with a strikeout after falling behind 3-0 in the count. Following Ruiz's home run in the top of the sixth, Newark went down in order in the bottom of the frame as M-O-T won its fifth-ever Delaware state championship in the major baseball division, and its first since 2009.

"It's certainly better to pitch with a four-run lead than a two-run lead going into the sixth," said Salony. "Tonight, we just got out in front, and we never relinquished the lead with good pitching.

That approach was a contrast to M-O-T's first win in the state tournament, when the District 1 winners rallied for five runs in the fifth inning to erase a 5-1 deficit and register a 6-5 win over Newark American. Lesher had stymied the M-O-T offense in the game's early innings, but he neared a pitch count threshold that would make him ineligible to pitch again for the remainder of the tournament if it was crossed. Newark American elected to preserve his eligibility and switch pitchers, and M-O-T capitalized to rally for the win.

M-O-T had lost its opening game at the District 1 tournament, but rebounded to win five consecutive games to win the double-elimination tournament. M-O-T swept Camden-Wyoming Little League in the championship series, registering 14-4 and 11-10 wins while claiming its 13th district championship in a 14-year span.

Newark American, which eliminated four-time defending Delaware state champion Newark National Little League in nine innings in the District 2 championship game, reached the state tournament for the first time since 2002. Newark American then won the opening game of the three-team state tournament, topping Milton Little League, 12-2 in five innings, to advance to its first meeting with M-O-T.

Three Newark American pitchers combined to allow just two hits against Milton, and the District 2 winners broke open a close game with five runs in the fourth inning. Graham Kline and Zach Czarnecki each delivered two-run singles to stretched Newark's lead to 8-2, before Newark added four more in the fifth to end the game.

Newark American later picked up a second win over Milton, topping the District 3 winners 7-4 in the elimination bracket final after their initial loss to M-O-T to earn a championship game berth.

M-O-T advanced to the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament in Bristol, Connecticut, following their state tournament win. The Delaware champions dropped games to Maine-Endwell (New York) Little League and Delmar (Maryland) Little League to finish the tournament in fifth place.
