Five Delaware leagues entered the first Delaware state tournament in 1957, and the championship game was an all-Newark affair as the National League blanked the Americans 3-0 in the championship game. Wilmington Optimist didn't compete in the 1957 tournament, but quickly emerged as the team to beat, winning four state championships and reaching the title game five years in a row beginning in 1958.
