Summary:

After surviving a tense, see-saw semifinal battle with South Des Plaines, the Kankakee Jaycees curtailed any championship game drama with an eight-run, three-homer first inning explosion in their 13-0 drubbing of Ralph Bermele. Kankakee's Danny Brewster and Otis Ward combined on an 11-strikeout no-hitter, and allowed only two Chicago baserunners (both on walks).

In the eight-run outburst, an error and two walks loaded the bases for cleanup hitter Billy Schmidt, who belted a towering drive over the left-center field fence. Two batters later, catcher Terry Dubois' two-run homer made it 6-0, and two batters later, Gary Arthur's homer made the score 8-0 eight batters into the game. Dubois later added a second homer, and Ward also connected for the Jaycees.

In their semifinal win, Kankakee used four pitchers and needed a four-run rally in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game and send it into extra innings. South Des Plaines had rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 defecits, and had taken a 7-3 lead with a five-run fifth inning highlighted by homers from Rusty Linn and Harry Tistle. Kankakee then responded with four in the sixth, with Brewster's two run single being the key blow. Otis Ward's two-run homer in the eighth appeared to win it for Kankakee, but Des Plaines tied it on a two-out, two-run error in the bottom of the inning. Finally, in the ninth, Brewster's three-run homer capped a four-run outburst, and the Jaycees held on to win the game. Kankakee pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of eight Des Plaines errors, while Des Plaines had eight hits and was helped by four Jaycee miscues.

The Kankakee Jaycees eventually won the North Region Tournament and qualified for the World Series in Williamsport, where they lost the championship game 3-0 to the Moreland LL (San Jose, CA) on Ted Campbell's no-hitter.
