In the first year of double-elimination tournament play in the U.S., Illinois Section and State Tournament play remained single-elimination (both switched to double elimination in 1981). Lockport's Dave Mondrella struck out 15 and threw a two-hit shutout in his team's semifinal victory over LaSalle National, and the District 11 champions followed that win with an 8-6 decision over Westlawn to win the title. Both Lockport and LaSalle National were making their first state tournament appearances.

As the winner of the two-team District 2 tournament, Paris was placed in the District 17 semifinals. Beardstown defeated Paris 11-7 in the District 17 championship game.
