Summary:

The turning point in the 1983 State Tournament occurred in the top of the first inning of an opening round game. Bradley-Bourbonnais American had opened up a 5-0 lead against Jackie Robinson West, the bases were loaded, there was only one out, and the top of the B-B order was coming up again. That's when JRW manager Joseph Haley relieved starting pitcher Sam Johnson with McGlother Irvin. Irvin recorded two strikeouts to end the inning, then JRW went to work. Homers by Anton Kinnerman and Johnson cut the B-B lead to 5-4, then, with a runner on base in the bottom of the sixth inning, Irvin slammed a two-run homer to complete the JRW comeback. After a win over Elgin National, JRW again beat B-B American to claim the first of its three state titles. With the title game tied at 4, eleven-year-old rightfielder Norrice Quarrels snuffed a B-B rally in the fourth by making a long running catch, then throwing to the plate to beat a sliding runner who was trying to score. In the bottom half of the inning, Quarrels' base hit drove in the go-ahead run, and JRW, which added fifth-inning two-run homers from Barry Freeman and Bryan Street, never looked back.

Jackie Robinson West later used a seven-run ninth inning to beat Wabash, Indiana 7-1 to win the Central Region Tournament and advance to the World Series.
