Bradley-Bourbonnais American snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the sixth inning of the deciding game, but South Holland South stormed back with four of their own in the bottom of the sixth to earn their second state title in three years.
Earlier in the tournament, B-B American had toppled South Holland South 4-3 when pinch runner Jason Meyers scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. South Holland earned three consecutive wins, including an easy 7-3 win over B-B American, to force a deciding game. A controversial play helped fuel the South Holland rally in the deciding game: with two on and no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, B-B shortstop Eric Perkins fielded a grounder, appeared to tag baserunner Ken Sterling as he raced for third, and threw to second for a force that completed a double play. However, the second-base umpire ruled that Perkins' throw pulled the second baseman off the bag, and that Perkins had not tagged Sterling. Two walks and Matt Cook's RBI single knotted the score, and an error allowed the winning run to score.
South Holland South went on to win the Central Region Tournament. The Illinois champions opened the tournament with consecutive shutouts, and outscoring its five tournament opponents by a 49-13 margin.
