Summary:

Chicago Westlawn emerged as the champion in one of the more competitive Illinois state tournaments on record with a 3-1 victory over Norridge in the championship game.

Winning pitcher Kevin Goshorn dominated in the title game win. The burly right-hander registered 16 strikeouts, scattered four hits, and walked only two in his complete game victory. Goshorn struck out the side in the last five innings of the game.

The title game began with a scare. Westlawn leadoff hitter Michael Kolecki made contact on the game's first pitch, but the ball ricocheted back and struck Kolecki in the face. He was replaced by Neil Lynch (Kolecki returned to play in the Central Region tournament), and Westlawn went on to score a pair of unearned runs against a flat Norridge defense. Lynch and second-place hitter Michael Kafka reached on errors -- the only two miscues of the game -- and Lynch then scored on Ryne White's groundout to the second baseman. Goshorn drilled a single to right, and four batters into the game, Westlawn had a 2-0 lead.

Norridge pitcher Alberto DiMichels never fully settled down, but he managed to shut down the Westlawn offense for the rest of the game. DiMichels never escaped an inning in 1-2-3 fashion, but allowed only Michael Leonard's run-producing blooper the rest of the way, while allowing five hits and walking four.

Norridge finally broke into the scoring column when C.J. Mikucki doubled in the fifth and later scored on Joey Napoli's single to center. Joey Alongi drew a walk to open the sixth, but Goshorn bore down, and struck out the final three batters of the game to clinch Westlawn's first state title since 1972. Westlawn also claimed top honors in Illinois in 1968.

Westlawn advanced to the title game by knocking off three consecutive opponents. The District 15 champions opened the tournament by topping Rock Island Islander 4-3. Islander, which won the state title in the 9-10 year old division in 1997 (eliminating Westlawn along the way), returned virtually the entire roster from its eleven-year-old dominated 1998 Section 5 runner-up squad.

Westlawn then used the longball to knock off local favorite Lansing East 4-3. Jason Borgens' two-run shot in the second and later solo homers by Joe Synal and White gave Westlawn the 4-3 win. Lansing outhit the Chicagoans 8-5, but Goshorn walked only one and Westlawn played flawless defense in the field. Westlawn then handed Norridge a 4-2 defeat to move into the title game.

Lansing rebounded to edge Robinson 6-5 in extra innings -- the two clubs were tied 1-1 after six before a wild seventh inning -- and then fell 5-3 in eight innings to Norridge. Cory Anderson struck out 14 on the mound and hit a game-ending two-run homer to left to send Norridge into the title game.

Westlawn lost its opener in pool competition at the Central Region tournament in Indianapolis, but rebounded to win four consecutive games to advance to the semifinals. White struck out 15 and hurled a five-hitter as Westlawn edged Tallmadge (OH) 4-3 to advance to the region championship game. The Illinois champions then suffered the same fate as the 1968 and 1972 clubs, dropping an 11-9 decision to Brownsburg (IN) in the title game and finishing their summer one game shy of the World Series.
