Summary:

His team made the most of its three hits, and pitcher Chris Vermuellen defeated Moline American for the second time as Lansing East defeated the Quad Cities-area team 3-1 in the championship game of the Illinois state tournament in Robinson. The win gave Lansing East its first state title, and advanced the District 6 champions to the Great Lakes region tournament in Indianapolis, IN.

Vermuellen also jump-started the Lansing offense with a second inning single in the championship game. Vermuellen stole second and third, and then scored the game's first run on a passed ball. Two innings later, Tom Zelasko singled and Joe Rizzi homered as Lansing stretched the lead to 3-0.

The three Lansing hits were all that Moline starter Michael Mack allowed, but they provided enough offense for Vermuellen. The right-hander scattered eight hits and struck out nine in a complete game effort.

Vermuellen also defeated Moline American on the tournament's opening day, pitching a four-hitter in Lansing's 7-1 win. Zelasko's two-run homer in the first set the tone for Lansing East, which built a 5-0 lead in the second inning. The winners managed only four hits in the game, but Vermullen struck out seven and kept Moline's offense in check.

Lansing East followed its first win over Moline American with a come-from-behind 6-4 win over Brown County. Brian DeWitt hit a three-run homer as the downstate team jumped on Rizzi for a quick 4-0 lead in the second inning.

Lansing manager Vince Rizzi then replaced his son with Zelansko in the third, and the new pitcher shut down Brown County the rest of the way, striking out nine and allowing only one hit over four innings of work. Lansing East pulled to within 4-3, and Rizzi highlighted a three-run fifth inning rally with an RBI single that scored Vermuellen with the go-ahead run as Lansing advanced to the state championship game. Jeffrey Booker doubled for Lansing, while Zelansko and Vermuellen each had two hits.

Moline American earned the second title game berth by winning three straight games following their opening round loss to Lansing East. Pace Bennett pitched a two-hitter and Ryan Marik was 3-for-3 with three runs scored as Moline eliminated first-time state qualifier Hinsdale 5-1. Mark Krismanits, who followed Marik in the batting order, added a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

The next evening, Moline used a pair of three-run rallies to eliminate Antioch 6-1. Krismanits had two hits and two RBIs, and Benjamin Condit added a two-run single. Mack threw a five-hitter and struck out eight.

Moline then upended Brown County and ace pitcher Joshua Babb in the loser's bracket finals 10-4. Babb had allowed only a single unearned run over the course of district, sectional, and state tournament play, and had pitched a one-hitter in Brown County's 1-0 win over Antioch on the tournament's opening day. Moline took a 2-1 lead into the fourth before erupting for a seven run rally that put the game out of reach. Krismanits and Condit had a pair of hits for the winners, while pitcher Andrew Serres struck out eight in a complete game effort. Matt Bordenkircher hit a two-run homer for Brown County.

Lansing East split its four pool games at the Great Lakes region tournament, and advanced to the semifinal round before falling 9-8 to eventual runner-up Roosevelt Park (Michigan).
