Batter-by-Batter recap

With over 7,000 leagues competing in Little League Baseball's international tournament worldwide each year, the line separating teams that advance deep into the tournament from those that fall earlier can at times be razor-thin.

Case in point: the 2004 Mundelein National Little League all-star team. Mundelein National won the town's first District 16 championship in fifteen years before eventually falling to Crystal Lake Continental Little League in the 'if' game of the Illinois Section 4 tournament in Woodstock. But one of Crystal Lake's players failed to meet Little League Baseball's minimum mandatory play requirements for international tournament competition, giving Mundelein new life via a forfeit victory.

The Lake County club made good use of its second chance: one week later, Mundelein National won the Illinois state championship.

Mundelein National posted three consecutive victories at Hegewisch Little League's field on Chicago's Southeast side, including a 3-0 win over Bradley-Bourbonnais American Little League in the championship game. The win gave the league its first-ever state championship, and made Mundelein the first District 16 league ever to advance beyond state tournament play in the major baseball division. Mundelein eventually reached the semifinals of the Great Lakes Region tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana.

"It's not a team of superstars, but (the kids) have all played a lot of baseball," said Mundelein coach Wilbur Kephardt of his team.

Steve Piasecki led the charge for Mundelein in the state championship game, pitching a four-hit shutout and striking out seven batters. Only three Bradley-Bourbonnais baserunners reached scoring position in the game.

"Their pitcher did a great job on the mound," said Bradley-Bourbonnais American manager Dennis Bunck. "With him getting both his fastball and curveballs over for strikes, it kind of had our kids guessing what the next pitch would be."

Piasecki also had a hand in both of Mundelein's run-producing innings. In the second inning, the left-handed batter led off with a double into the left center field gap. Two batters later, Nick Delaquila lined a hanging curveball into left field to score special pinch runner Mike Harris with the game's first run.

In the fourth, Mundelein's Mike Gembra drew a leadoff walk before Piasecki drilled a two-run homer over the left center field fence.

"That pitch was out of the strike zone," said Bunck of Piasecki's home run. "It wasn't a bad pitch at all. There's not that many kids that can go up there and hit a ball out of the strike zone that far."

Bradley-Bourbonnais threatened in the next two innings, stranding two base runners in the fourth and loading the bases in the fifth. Piasecki fielded a line drive that had deflected off his leg and threw out the batter to end the fourth inning, and later kept the District 18 champions scoreless in a 28-pitch fifth inning with a strikeout that ended the threat.

Bradley-Bourbonnais American pitcher John Fightmaster struck out eleven and walked only one in six innings of work.

Mundelein had reached the title game with a 14-2 win over Robinson in their opening round game and a 7-4 victory over Evergreen Park in the winner's bracket finals. Bradley-Bourbonnais American bounced back from a second-round loss to Evergreen Park, avenging the defeat with a 3-2 victory in the elimination bracket finals. The win moved Bradley-Bourbonnais American into the state championship game for the third time in five years, and for the sixth time in the league's history.

Bradley-Bourbonnais all-star teams have more appearances in the state championship game than any other Illinois league. Three other Bradley-Bourbonnais teams reached the state championship game prior to the league's split into two charters in 1982, and Bradley-Bourbonnais National also reached the title game in 1990.

Luke Akerman snapped a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the fifth inning in Bradley-Bourbonnais' win over Evergreen Park, and Brent Klimchuk's RBI double later in the inning extended the lead. Evergreen Park's Mike Parker closed the gap with an RBI single in the fifth, and Neil Glackin added a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth before Bradley-Bourbonnais American pitcher Josh Shimanek closed out the victory. Shimanek struck out nine and scattered five hits in a complete game effort.

Bradley-Bourbonnais American had stranded nine baserunners, including six in scoring position, in a seven inning loss to Evergreen Park earlier in the tournament.
