Pitcher Keith Lehmann retired the last eight hitters he faced, and his Western Springs Little League all-star team struck for six runs in the fifth inning to defeat Crystal Lake American Little League, 8-2, in the Illinois state championship game at Roseland Little League's field in Chicago.

Lehmann allowed only two hits in a complete game effort, and did not allow a baserunner after Crystal Lake American took a brief 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. The right-hander struck out six batters and allowed only three balls to be hit out of the infield during the game.

Western Springs took a 1-0 lead when Jake Elliott doubled and later scored on a throwing error, but the early innings of the title game were marked by a series of missed opportunities by the District 9 champions. After taking the initial lead, Western Springs stranded two or more baserunners in each of the game's first four innings, and at one point found the score tied 2-2 despite outhitting Crystal Lake by a 9-2 margin at the time.

The string of baserunners in the game's early innings drove up the pitch count for Crystal Lake's hurler, and after pitch count limits forced a pitching change one batter into the fifth, Western Springs pounced. Catcher Matt Aikens took a pitch, then launched a towering home run over the left center field fence to give Western Springs a 4-2 lead. David Reed scored on a throwing error following Christopher O'Reilly's grounder, and Elliott later scored on the back end of a double steal. Lehmann capped the inning with his third hit of the game, a line drive, two-run homer over the left-center field fence.

Crystal Lake American had tied the game on Brian Branecki's home run in the second inning, then moved in front when Dan Levoritz reached on an infield hit and scored on a fielder's choice in the fourth. Western Springs tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Jake Toner reached on an infield single and later scored on a first-and-third double steal.

Lehmann's three hits paced Western Springs' 13-hit attack, while Eddie Gengo and Aikens each had a pair of hits. Every position in the Western Springs batting order had at least one hit in the game.

Western Springs had reached the championship game by edging Tri-County Little League, 2-1, on the tournament's opening day, then pounding Crystal Lake American, 16-3 in five innings, in the winner's bracket final.

Crystal Lake rebounded from the loss to edge Chicago's Jackie Robinson West Little League, 2-1 in eight innings. The game ended when a Crystal Lake batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning. Earlier in the tournament, the District 13 winners had rallied from a 4-2 deficit in a 5-4 opening round win over Jackie Robinson West, then scored four times in the fifth inning to defeat Peru Little League, 4-2.
