Summary:

Moline National Little League began the 2010 international tournament as a team that outscored its first eight opponents by a ridiculous 148-1 margin.

By the time it was done, they'd proved their mettle as a team with a deep reservoir of resiliency.

Moline overcame a trio of two-run deficits, and outlasted two-time defending champion Jackie Robinson West Little League, 8-7 in eight innings, in the deciding game of the Illinois state tournament in Burbank. With the win, Moline National completed a three-win comeback after dropping to the tournament's bottom bracket, and earned the league's second state championship in the major baseball division.

The core of Moline's team won Illinois championships in the 9-10 year old division in 2008 and the 10-11 year old age division in 2009.

"They don't quit," said Moline manager Mike Owens, Jr. "They keep with it, keep pushing themselves, and keep themselves up."

That tenacity was ever-present in the tournament's final game, when Cacey O'Brien, Andrew Wadkins, and Mitchell Owens all erased two-run Jackie Robinson West leads with two-run home runs.

Moline pushed across the decisive run the eighth inning. Mitchell Owens was intentionally walked to open the inning, then O'Brien singled up the middle, and one out later, Wadkins drew a walk to load the bases. Jordan Borkhardt then tapped a dribbler down the third base line, and the defense's throw to the plate hit Owens in the back before he crossed the plate with the winning run.

The win gave Moline two wins in three games against their evenly matched Chicago opponents. Jackie Robinson West fired the first salvo, surprising the Quad Cities team with four home runs while overwhelming Moline, 10-0 in the winner's bracket final. Jeremy Houston opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning, then pitcher Rafi Gross highlighted a six-run second inning with a grand slam. Buck Lewis and Houston added later home runs as Gross struck out twelve and held the powerful Moline offense to just two hits.

"We've been expecting something like this," said Mike Owens, Jr. "It's state. The teams are supposed to be good.

"When you're twelve years old, you never know what they're thinking," added the Moline skipper. "We were kind of shell-shocked after the grand slam."

The loss dropped Moline to the elimination bracket, and made Jackie Robinson West the first league in Illinois history to return to the state championship game for a third consecutive year.

Moline bounced back the next night, forcing a rematch with a 16-7 victory over Clear Ridge Little League. Moline scored two runs in the first inning, then added four in the second and four more in the third to open up an early 10-0 lead.

"When you get shut out the night before, you always want to get started as early as you can," said Mike Owens, Jr. "It helps you relax a little bit and helps your pitchers a little bit. No question, that's a big difference."

Mitchell Owens led the offense with three hits, including a home run. Casey O'Brien also homered, while Connor O'Brien, Aaron Foulk, and Mike Hanley each had two hits for the winners.

The next evening, Moline forced the tournament to a final game by scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Jackie Robinson West, 4-3. The Chicagoans led 2-0 for most of the game thanks to a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, before Moline rallied to take the lead in the fifth. Andrew Wadkins reached on an infield single, then three consecutive walks forced in the inning's first run. Mitchell Owens followed with a two-run single that pulled Moline into the lead.

In the sixth, Moline was one strike away from winning the game when Jackie Robinson West's Troy Williams slammed a game-tying home run. Moline responded in the bottom of the inning, and pushed across a run with two outs to scratch out the victory. After a pair of strikeouts, Jordan Borkhardt blooped a single into right center field. He moved to third on a pair of passed balls, then scored when Mike Hanley singled sharply into to center field.

Mitchell Owens struck out eight batters and held Jackie Robinson West to five hits in a complete game effort, while Houston struck out eleven in five innings of work for the Chicagoans.

Moline had opened the tournament with an 11-1 victory over Salem Little League. It marked the ninth consecutive four-inning victory for Moline since the start of the international tournament, but the first time the team had allowed a run. Moline defeated four opponents by a 91-0 margin in the District 5 tournament, and then added three more wins by a 36-0 margin in Section 5 play.

After beating Salem, Moline faced a deficit for the first time, but rallied to beat Tri-Cities Little League by a 13-6 score to set up their first meeting with Jackie Robinson West.

"Tri-Cities was the best hitting team we'd seen" to that point in the tournament, explained Mike Owens, Jr. "But we still got a win."

Moline kept winning, claiming three wins in pool competition at the Great Lakes Region tournament, and then advancing to the championship game with a 6-5 win over Burlington (Wisconsin) Little League. In the championship game, Moline fell, 4-0, as Hamilton (Ohio) West Side Little League advanced to the Little League World Series for the fourth time in the league's history.
