Clay Velazquez snapped a 3-3 tie with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning, then moved to the mound and recorded three strikeouts in the bottom of the frame as his Rock Falls Little League all-star team edged Mundelein Little League, 4-3, to win the 2011 Illinois state championship at Butler Lake Park in Libertyville.

With the victory, Rock Falls became the first-ever District 19 league to claim the state championship in the major baseball division since the district was formed in 1964. Just one other District 19 league had advanced beyond sectional competition during that span.

"It feels really good," said Rock Falls manager Ronnie Pillars. "The boys played another good ballgame."

Rock Falls lost once during the District 19 tournament, but won seven consecutive games including six in post-district competition, and advanced to the Great Lakes Region tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Rock Falls opened state tournament play with a 4-2 victory over Mundelein, and after topping Olney Little League in the winner's bracket final, downed Mundelein again in the title game.

Mundelein had tallied 29 runs over the course of two games in the bottom bracket to earn the championship game rematch.

Relief pitcher Ricky Rank helped lift Rock Falls to the championship game win, throwing 4-2/3 innings of scoreless relief after entering the game with one out in the first inning after Mundelein had scored three early runs.

Previously, Rock Falls had relied on a pair of big innings in their victory over Olney. The downstate team opened an early 1-0 lead, before Rock Falls scored four runs in the second inning and six more in the fourth. Alex Cantu's run-scoring double keyed the initial rally, and Bronson Mintun's three-run homer was the catalyst in the six-run burst.

Pitcher Cayden Roberts struck out six batters over 5-2/3 innings of work, and stranded a pair of Olney base runners in both the third and fourth innings to maintain Rock Falls' early 4-1 lead.

"I'm very happy," said Pillars after the win. "The whole crew's really jelling right now. Everybody's getting the job done."

Pillars had been optimistic about his team's chances on the eve of the tournament.

"I expect these kids to get it done, I really do," said the Rock Falls manager prior to the state tournament. "These kids are picking each other up, playing at a high level, and they really want this. I really do see us getting this done."

Rock Falls' success provided one bookend to a historic summer for District 19 leagues: while the team was competing in the region tournament in Indianapolis, Sterling Little League, which is a sister city located just across the Rock River from Rock Falls, won the 2011 Little League Softball World Series championship in the 11-12 year old age division.

Mundelein bounced back from their initial loss to Rock Falls with a 12-0 win over Evergreen Park Little League and a 17-5 decision over Olney. Mundelein had previously reached the state championship game in three consecutive summers between 2004 and 2006.
