Summary:

When Brownsburg Little League made its historic run to the Little League World Series in 1999, the publicity surrounding the Williamsport-bound squad overshadowed an important development: Brownsburg's 9-10 year old all-star team was also piling up the victories, and eventually won the Indiana state tournament. The Bulldogs were not done winning yet.

Two years later, as the players turned 11 and 12 years old, Brownsburg was still winning. Brownsburg captured an unprecedented third consecutive Indiana state championship in the major baseball division, and, for the second time in three years, advanced to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Brownsburg met little resistance as it marched into the state championship game against Crown Point. The Bulldogs outscored their seven district and sectional tournament opponents 61-2, and rolled past four opponents at the state tournament by a 41-3 margin.

The championship game, however, was a different story. Jeff King led off the game with a home run, and Michael Bradburn drove in a pair of runs in the third to open a 4-1 lead for Brownsburg, but Crown Point's Jerry Patrick launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to tie the game. For the first time since the start of tournament play, Brownsburg faced a serious challenge. Regardless of how well they'd played to that point, the Bulldogs' summer would come down to the next three innings.

They were up to the task. T.J. Baumet singled home King with the go-ahead run in the fourth, and later scored on a wild pitch. Brody Dowell, who took second on the wild pitch, also scored when catcher Mickey Meyer rapped a single.

Pitcher Kyle Waggoner then closed out the win. The left-hander, who struck out ten and took a two-hitter into the final inning of the title game, breezed through the fourth and fifth innings, and quickly recorded a pair of strikeouts in the sixth. Crown Point rallied -- three consecutive hits and a Brownsburg error cut the Bulldogs' lead to 7-5 and loaded the bases -- but Waggoner registered a game-ending strikeout to clinch Brownsburg's third consecutive trip to Indianapolis for the region tournament.

"These kids just amazed me today," said Brownsburg manager Gary King, who piloted all three Brownsburg state titlists.

"We really kind of rolled through the tournament and nobody really touched us too badly (until the title game). They held in there. Every time we got down, we came back and jumped back into the game."

Falling behind was not an issue for Brownsburg in their earlier state tournament games. Brownsburg shelled St. Joe Central National and Terre Haute South by 10-0 margins in their first two games. Baumet threw a one-hitter and homered twice against St. Joe, while the Bulldogs knifed past Terre Haute behind an eight run first inning outburst.

Brownsburg followed their two shutouts with an 8-3 win over Crown Point. Both teams had clinched semifinal round berths with wins in their first two wins, and with the semifinals and championship game scheduled as a day/night doubleheader for the two finalists, both clubs held their top pitchers out of the final pool game.

Brownsburg dispatched South Bend East Side 13-0 in the first semifinal game, and Crown Point rallied past previously undefeated North Posey in the second game. Baumet threw a three-hitter, while Waggoner (twice), Jeff King, and Bradburn all homered. Crown Point trailed North Posey 3-2 in the fifth before Matt Ernest's home run keyed their 6-5 comeback win.

Brownsburg then defeated Crown Point a second time, and clinched their third consecutive berth in the region tournament.

"It's unbelievable we're going back for the third time," said Gary King, referring to the region tournament. "To think there's an opportunity to go back (potentially to the Little League World Series) and take a second son just amazes me."

King's team made the most of the opportunity. Two weeks after winning the state title, Brownsburg defeated Roosevelt Park (Michigan) 4-1 to win the Great Lakes region tournament. Like King's older son, Gary Jr., who was a member of Brownsburg's 1999 squad, Jeff King and his teammates were headed for the Little League World Series.

"This is every little boy's dream," marveled Gary King. "And I'm lucky enough to share in that with my sons."

At the World Series, Brownsburg swept its three pool games and reached the U.S. semifinal before falling to eventual U.S. champion Apopka National (Florida) 6-1.
