Summary:

A day after racing to an early lead and cruising to a semifinal round win, Hagerstown Little League left it until the late innings.

The result was the same -- a victory.

Hagerstown pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to force extra innings, then rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth to edge homestanding Don Ayers Time Corners American Little League, 7-6, in the Indiana state championship game. With the win, Hagerstown claimed its first-ever state championship in the major baseball division, and became the second consecutive District 6 champion to advance to the Great Lakes Region tournament in Indianapolis.

Hagerstown won all four of its games at the state tournament, and finished 8-0 versus Indiana competition. Six of the team's wins came by three runs or fewer, and the team's eight inning win over Don Ayers Time Corners American marked the fourth-longest state championship game in Indiana history.

Hagerstown opened the state tournament with a 7-6 decision over South Bend's Chet Waggoner Little League, then advanced to the semifinal round with a 7-4 decision over Valparaiso American Little League. Trent Weiss opened the win over Valparaiso with a home run, and Zack Bowman later added a double.

The District 6 winners followed these victories with a 12-5 semifinal round decision over Jeff/GRC American Little League. Hagerstown broke open a scoreless game with seven runs in the top of the second inning, and after Jeff/GRC American closed to within 7-4, added three more in the fourth and two in the fifth to seal the victory. Jeffersonville stranded thirteen runners in the game, and left the bases loaded on three occasions. One of these was the first inning, when Jeff/GRC loaded the bases with no outs before a pair of strikeouts and a pop out ended the threat. Mason Hicks then opened the scoring in the top of the second with a three-run homer that turned the game's momentum and set Hagerstown on a course for the win.

Don Ayers Time Corners American reached the title game by winning four consecutive elimination games, the last of which avenged an early round loss to Dyer Little League. Dyer topped the tournament hosts by an 11-4 score in the second round of play, but Don Ayers won three consecutive games in the bottom portion of their bracket, then ousted Dyer, 11-6, in the semifinal round. Dyer had scored ten or more runs in each of its three tournament games prior to the semifinal round matchup with Don Ayers Time Corners American.

The win moved Don Ayers Time Corners American into the state championship game in the major baseball division for the first time since 1996. Jeff/GRC American had also reached the semifinal round after suffering a loss in their opening game of bracket competition.
