Iowa State Championship Game:

Grandview 2, Headid American 1 (TITLE)

Summary:

Grandview avenged an earlier loss against Sioux City's Headid American Little League with a 2-1 win in the championship game of the 2002 Iowa state tournament in Boone.

The win, Grandview's fourth in a row following a defeat on the second day of round-robin competition, gave the Des Moines-based league its fifth state title. Grandview's five state titles are the most won by any Iowa league.

Davenport's Emies and Northwest Little Leagues have won four titles each. Grandview's most recent state title came in 1991, and the 1980 Grandview National all-star team reached the Little League World Series.

Grandview opened the tournament with a 9-7 win over Johnston before falling 4-3 to Headid American. The District 5 champions then won four consecutive games, including a decisive 9-0 win over two-time defending state and region tournament champion Davenport East on the final day of round-robin competition.

The win over Davenport kept Grandview in second place in the final round-robin standings. A loss would have dropped their record to 3-2 and pushed the eventual champions into a three-way tie on record with Davenport East and Johnston. Davenport would likely have won the tiebreaker and advanced to face Headid American in the championship game had they defeated Grandview.

Grandview won all four of their preliminary round games at the Midwest Region tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana, but lost 2-1 to fellow unbeaten Webb City Little League (Missouri) in the region championship game.
