Summary:

In Major League Baseball, a long reliever is often one of the more marginal talents on a team's pitching staff.

Not so for the Plymouth/New Hope Little League all-star team.

Reliever Aaron Myers moved from shortstop to the mound early in the first inning of the Minnesota state championship game after Shoreview West Little League had scored twice and threatened to force the tournament to an 'if' game. Myers stymied the rally with three consecutive strikeouts, and went on to throw six shutout innings to help his team force extra innings. Plymouth scratched for a run in the top of the seventh, and the District 1 champions edged Shoreview West, 3-2, to claim their second state championship in the major baseball division in the past five years.

With the win, Plymouth/New Hope advanced to the Midwest Region tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Shoreview's initial five hitters reached base in the first inning, including a trio of walks that loaded the bases and forced in a pair of runs. But Myers registered 13 strikes among the 16 pitches he threw in the first inning after taking the mound, and he limited Shoreview to just one runner in scoring position for the balance of his outing. The right-hander struck out 15, walked one, and surrendered just one hit before turning the ball over to Zach Meyers in the seventh.

Plymouth pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. Travis Mosley opened the inning with a single to center field, then moved to third when Bjorn Jensen reached on an error. Jack Uecker then lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Mosley with the eventual winning run.

Zach Myers allowed a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the seventh, as a dropped third strike and ground single to center field put the potential winning run on base for Shoreview West. But the right-hander induced a force out and a called third strike to close out the win.

Plymouth/New Hope won all nine games against Minnesota leagues during district and state tournament competition, including wins over each of the other three entrants in the state tournament. Plymouth opened the tournament with a 12-2, four inning victory over Hermantown Little League, then reached the state championship game with a 10-0, five inning victory over Itasca Little League.

Plymouth trailed Hermantown 2-0 after 2-1/2 innings of its opener, but the District 1 winners tallied seven runs in the bottom of the third inning, then invoked the mercy rule with five more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Jensen sparked Plymouth's rally in the third with a leadoff single. He scored the inning's first run on a wild pitch, and Plymouth then took the lead when Zach Myers lined a two-run single to left field that scored Uecker and Aaron Myers. Aaron Latterell's sacrifice fly scored Zach Myers, then Aaron Ross, Charlie Manson, and Jack Preimesberger each delivered run-scoring hits before the inning ended.

In the fourth, Plymouth added five runs on just three hits, as a hit batsman, walk, error, and wild pitch fueled their rally. Mosley's line single to right field plated Latterell and Preimesberger with the game's final run.

Plymouth's eight hits in their opening round win came from eight different players, and the team also spread the pitching duties, with Zach Reecy, Mosley, and Logan Nehring combining to scatter six hits.

The next day, Plymouth/New Hope jumped to a 5-0 lead before Itasca came to bat in the bottom of the first inning, while Zach Myers and Nehring combined to limit Itasca to just one hit and two baserunners in a 10-0 Plymouth victory.

Plymouth/New Hope capitalized on a pair of Itasca errors in its first inning rally. Aaron Myers opened the game by reaching on an error, and one out later, an infield single and a walk loaded the bases. Ross then reached on a second error, which scored Aaron Myers with the game's first run. Mosley delivered a two-run single that scored Nehring and Latterell, then Ross and Mosley later scored to extend the lead.

Mosley and Jensen delivered run-scoring hits in the third inning, before Myers and Latterell did the same in the fourth. Latterell's single scored Zach Myers and pushed Plymouth's lead to double-digits, before Nehring closed out the win with a scoreless inning in the bottom of the frame.

Mosley had three singles for Plymouth, which recorded 25 singles among its 27 hits in the state tournament. Aaron and Zach Myers both had a pair of hits, while Nehring scored three runs. On the mound, Zach Myers and Nehring combined to strike out ten batters and walk none. Both hurlers were efficient, as 40 of Plymouth's 47 pitches were strikes.

The two victories moved Plymouth into the state championship game, where they would face a Shoreview team that fell into the bottom bracket following a 9-8 opening round loss to Ithaca. Shoreview rebounded with 14-4 wins over both Hermantown and Ithaca, but was unable to solve Aaron Myers in the title game as Plymouth/New Hope became the eleventh Minnesota champion to emerge from District 1 in the past thirteen years.

Plymouth/New Hope won all four of its pool games at the Midwest Region tournament, and advanced to the semifinal round before being eliminated following an 11-7 loss to Kearney (Nebraska) Little League.
