Nevada State Tournament
Tournament Results:
Opening Round:
Matt Harrison pitched a complete game shutout and scored two runs as Henderson's Green Valley Little League defeated Las Vegas Red Rock 4-0 in the Nevada state championship game at Children's Memorial Park in Las Vegas.
The win was Green Valley's second over Red Rock at the state tournament, and gave the District 2 champions their fifth Nevada state title. Green Valley also won the Nevada state tournament in 1983, 1985, 1989, and 1991.
Green Valley opened the state tournament by defeating Reno Continental 4-2. Travis Jones used a bevy of offspeed pitches to hold Continental to two runs on four hits through the first five innings before Harrison closed out the win in the sixth. Harrison was 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Jake Whiteaker and Colin Corrigan each scored a run.
Green Valley then turned up the offense enough to outslug Red Rock 13-9 in the winner's bracket finals. Harrison, Carmon Romano, and Jake Wagner all hit solo home runs, while Ben Morris paced Green Valley's 16 hit attack with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate.
Red Rock defeated Reno Continental to earn a rematch in the title game, but Harrison was in control in Green Valley's 4-0 win. Green Valley's ace struck out seven, walked one, and allowed only four hits in the win. Wagner contributed two hits and scored a run, while pinch runner Sean Parker plated the other Green Valley run.
Green Valley advanced to the state tournament after rebounding from an opening round loss and winning the double-elimination District 2 tournament. Green Valley dropped a 4-1 opening round decision to Las Vegas Central, eliminated five opponents, then swept Central 7-6 and 6-5 in the championship series. The title gave Green Valley its second District 2 title in three years.
By winning the state title, Green Valley earned a berth in the Western Region tournament in San Bernardino, CA. The Nevada representative qualified for the semifinal round by splitting their four pool games, and defeated San Xavier (Arizona) 5-4 in the region semifinals before falling 12-8 to Southern California's Oceanside American LL in the championship round. It was Green Valley's second appearance in a region title game, as the league was runner-up to Sacramento Pacific (NoCal) in the 1983 Western Region tournament.
