Summary:

Johnny Yaldizian singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the tenth inning to propel Tenafly to its second consecutive state title in the longest championship game in New Jersey history.

After four scoreless innings, Kevin Coyle's two-run homer sparked a rally as Tenafly broke through against Collingswood pitcher Bob McGrath as for four runs in the fifth. Collingswood rallied, however, and capitalized on four Tenafly errors in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game. Three Tenafly runners were thrown out at the plate (one in the eighth and two in the ninth) before Yaldizian's hit lifted them to the win. Tenafly pitcher Al Minetto, who fired a two-hitter in the 1963 state tournament semifinals, struck out 18 in nine innings before giving way to Coyle in the tenth, while McGrath struck out six and scattered ten hits.

In the semifinals, Ralph Stanley escaped a pair of jams in his complete game victory and Tenafly capitalized on four Six-Eleven errors in a 6-2 win. Collingswood pitcher Gary Goehringer struck out 15 and allowed only two bunt singles to power his team past Secaucus 3-0.
