Jeff Hirsh's home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning provided the only offense in title game, and gave Margate City its first state title. Hirsh also pitched a complete game against Fort Lee, allowing only five hits and escaping a bases-loaded, no out threat in the fourth. Fort Lee pitcher Tony Delchop took the loss despite allowing only two hits and surrendering no walks.
Fort Lee, led by a pair of Wally Adee two-run homers, defeated Upper Saddle River in the semifinals, while Margate City tallied single runs in each of the first four innings of its 4-2 win over Bernardsville. Upper Saddle River had advanced to the state tournament with a pair of eleven-year-olds (Roger Kreutzer and Steve Dreyer) as its primary pitchers.
