Summary:

Aptos Little League coach Mark Eichhorn kept his team laughing before the final game of the 2002 Northern California divisional tournament with an entertaining string of impersonations, in which Willie Nelson, Julio Iglasias, and the Wicked Witch of the West all made appearances.

Pitcher Kevin Eichhorn made sure his teammates were still laughing afterwards.

Kevin Eichhorn pitched a four-hitter and defeated San Carlos National for the second time as Aptos claimed a 5-0 victory in the championship game at Lucchesi Park in Petaluma.

Pitching on two days rest, Kevin Eichhorn struck out eleven in his championship game effort, giving him 35 strikeouts in eighteen innings of work at the divisional. The right-hander held San Carlos hitless for the first 3-2/3 innings of the game, and finished with a four-hitter. In the meantime, Aptos struck for five unearned runs to pull away for the win.

"No doubt about it, this is more fun than I ever imagined it would be," said Aptos manager Dave Anderson.

Aptos broke to an early lead by scoring an unearned run in the top of the first. Curtis Worden and Kevin Eichhorn opened the game with singles up the middle, and Worden scored on a throwing error following Kyle Anderson's fielder's choice grounder.

The District 39 champions stretched the lead in the third. Kevin Eichhorn and Kyle Anderson reached on consecutive throwing errors to open the floodgates, before Tyler Raymond's RBI double plated one run and Kevin Farmer's shot off the third baseman drove home two more. Relief pitcher Ryan Allgrove came in and shut down the Aptos offense with 3-1/3 hitless innings, but San Carlos was unable to solve Kevin Eichhorn and fell one game short of the championship after rebounding from a loss in the tournament's opening game.

"This Aptos team is a quality operation. Quality coaching, quality kids, quality decisions," said San Carlos manager Roy Allgrove after the championship game.

Roy Allgrove's perspective came from first-hand experience: San Carlos' other loss also came at the hands of Aptos and Kevin Eichhorn. The Aptos pitcher threw a one-hitter in a 5-0 opening round win, striking out ten and not allowing a runner to reach second base. Aptos scored once on a throwing error in the second, padded the lead on Worden's third inning home run, and broke the game open with three runs in the sixth. Mark Lamothe's bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left drove home Andrew Biancardi, and when San Carlos' catcher threw wildly to third in an attempt to throw out an Aptos baserunner, Tyler Raymond and Brian Godoy also scored.

Aptos followed their opening round win with an 11-4 victory over Peach Bowl. Aptos committed their only error of the tournament in the third inning, when Peach Bowl also capitalized on three walks to erase an early 2-0 deficit with a three run rally.

Aptos' coaching staff wasn't worried.

"This team knows how to adjust to pitchers. They always seem to strike in the second or third at-bat," explained Dave Anderson.

Aptos did just that, batting around in the top of the fourth and scoring five runs. Brian Godoy opened the inning with a double, and moved to third when Mark Lamothe singled and took second on the throw home. Catcher Drew McCauley tapped a roller to the pitcher, whose low throw to first to allowed McCauley to reach safely as Godoy scored the tying run. Lamothe and McCauley later scored on consecutive wild pitches to give Aptos a 5-3 lead. Aptos added two more in the inning, as Kevin Eichhorn walked and scored on Kyle Anderson's single, and Kyle Anderson scored when Peach Bowl threw wildly while trying to double up Kevin Farmer after a force out on an infield grounder.

Kyle Anderson recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fourth, and Aptos put the game away by sending ten batters to the plate in a four run fifth inning rally. Godoy led off with a solo home run, and McCauley, Kevin Eichhorn, and Kyle Anderson all scored in the inning.

Turlock National advanced to face Aptos in the winner's bracket finals by rallying past Antioch East 4-3. Antioch took a 3-0 lead, but Turlock got one back in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game on Nate Scott's two-run single in the fifth. In the sixth, Garrett Curiel doubled and scored the decisive run on Austin Keaton's game-ending bases-loaded single.

Kevin Eichhorn struggled in the first inning against Turlock, as the Section 6 winners jumped to a 2-0 lead. Kevin Eichhorn then took matters into his own hands. The right-hander was dominant on the mound, striking out fifteen and not allowing a hit or a baserunner past first base the rest of the way. Kevin Eichhorn recorded the other three outs on balls hit in the infield, and struck out the side three times while the Aptos offense went to work. After Worden's two-run homer tied the game in the third, Kevin Eichhorn jumped on a hanging curveball for a grand slam in the fifth to give Aptos the 6-2 victory.

While Aptos remained undefeated, San Carlos National worked its way through the loser's bracket. San Carlos rallied from 1-0 and 3-2 deficits to eliminate Antioch East 4-3, then edged Rocklin 5-4. The next day, Grant Bauer hit a two-run homer and pitcher Ryan Allgrove threw a three-hitter as San Carlos eliminated Turlock 6-2 to move into the championship game.

Bauer then helped his team with his arm, throwing a sparkling one-hitter as San Carlos edged Aptos 2-0 to force the tournament to an 'if' game. Bauer struck out thirteen and allowed only an infield single in the second inning. His bloop single in the bottom of the first scored Allgrove to open the scoring, and Bauer subsequently scored on a wild pitch to give his team its only runs.

For Aptos manager Dave Anderson and six of his players, the loss to San Carlos was the first after a summer filled with 33 consecutive wins spanning the White Sox team's regular season and Aptos' efforts in the international tournament. The team soon regained its winning ways. Kevin Eichhorn blanked San Carlos the next night, and Aptos moved on to the West Region tournament in San Bernardino.

"We're for Aptos now," said Roy Allgrove after his team's championship game loss. "But there's just one thing I told my boys -- when you see Aptos in the Little League World Series, just remember -- you beat that team."

Roy Allgrove was prophetic. Aptos rallied late to defeat Arrowhead Little League (Glendale, Arizona) 4-3 in the West Region championship game to earn a berth in the Little League World Series.

For Dave Anderson and his team, winning the Northern California championship meant that the fun was just beginning.
