Summary:

Pitcher Sean Downey threw a one-hitter, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs as his Moreland District Little League all-star team completed a sweep of the Northern California divisional tournament with a 10-0 victory over Visalia American Little League in the championship game.

The win, Moreland's fourth in as many games at the tournament, gave the District 12 champions a berth in the West Region tournament in San Bernardino, California, and marked the league's first Northern California championship since winning the Little League World Series in 1962.

Moreland District took control early in the championship game, battering a pair of Visalia pitchers for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kane Wolfe opened the rally with a single, then J.T. Bognanno followed with a two-run homer to center field. Jordan Gojenola and Downey added run-scoring singles, then back-to-back two-run doubles later in the inning from Spencer Deale and Wolfe broke the game open.

Moreland District added a run in the third, and Jonah Wesley led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a home run beyond the center field fence that invoked the mercy rule.

Downey, who struck out seven and walked two, surrendered a bloop single to Gabriel Meza in the first inning, then did not allow a hit for the remainder of the game.

West paced the Moreland District offense with three hits, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Whipple, Gojenola and Spencer Deale each added a pair of hits.

Moreland District opened the tournament with a 12-2 decision over Sunrise Little League, then edged two other opponents to reach the championship game. Gojenola singled and scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning to help his team edge Benicia Little League, 5-4, in a winner's bracket semifinal matchup, and Wolfe scattered three hits over 5-2/3 innings as Moreland District blanked Tracy National Little League, 4-0, in the winner's bracket final.

Steven Wright gave Moreland an early lead in the matchup with Tracy, delivering a run-scoring single in the second inning. Moreland District made the run hold up into the fifth inning, when Wolfe escaped a two-on, one-out jam after Tracy slugger Jonah Wesley pulled a long drive well past the outfield fence but just foul down the left field line.

In the bottom of the inning, Downey's two-run homer capped a three-run rally that gave Moreland District sufficient breathing room.

Wolfe struck out nine and walked three before departing one batter short of a complete game due to pitch count limits. Wright recorded the final out to lift Moreland District into the championship game.

Moreland District had used a big first inning to grab an early lead in the earlier win over Benicia. The District 53 champions scored twice in the top of the first inning, but Moreland District struck back for four in the bottom of the frame. Downey hit a two-run homer, and Whipple followed immediately with a solo shot. It was the second consecutive game in which Whipple homered, as his two-run shot helped Moreland District to ease past Citrus Heights in their tournament opener.

Visalia American suffered a different fate in their opener, when the District 34 winners fell to Redwood Empire Little League, 6-4. But Visalia -- which won five consecutive games to claim the Section 6 tournament following an opening round loss -- rebounded with a trio of wins to reach the championship game.

The third of these victories was most notable, as Visalia overcame a 6-2 lead with a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to edge Tracy National, 7-6, and advance to the championship game. Jose Valverde keyed the comeback with a bloop single down the right field line that drove in a pair of runs. With two outs, Tracy National elected to intentionally walk Meza, but Dannon Frigulti followed with a drive to left center field that tied the game. Hayden Vargas then drove a pitch over the left fielder's head to score special pinch runner Nate Wyatt with the winning run.

Tracy had earlier jumped to a 4-0 lead when Manny Robles and Tyler Cox delivered consecutive two-run homers with two outs in the first inning.

Frigulti had three hits and three runs batted in to pace Visalia's offense, while Wesley was 3-for-3 with a double and run batted in to lead Tracy National.
