Summary:

Steven Blum pitched a no-hitter and Tyler Waters hit a solo home run as West Salem defeated Pendleton 1-0 in the championship game of the 2001 Oregon state tournament at Central Point.

West Salem, which also defeated Pendleton 1-0 in the tournament's opening round, won all four of its games in the double-elimination tournament. West Salem became the first District 7 league to win the Oregon state title, and also the first Salem area league to claim the flag in the 32 year history of Little League Baseball in the Salem area.

After edging Pendleton in their opener, West Salem rallied past Portland's Parkrose Little League in the winner's bracket semifinals. Parkrose jumped to a 2-0 with one out in the first inning before West Salem manager Steve Blum called on his son to pitch. The younger Blum struck out eleven, and shut out Parkrose for the duration of the game. Jordan Davis' three-run homer in the fourth gave West Salem the lead for good as the District 7 champions rallied for a 5-2 win.

The win advanced West Salem into the winner's bracket finals, where Blum's two-run, walk off home run in the seventh propelled the Salem team to a 4-2 victory. Pitcher Kyle Farrell allowed a pair of unearned runs in the first, but West Salem was able to rally back and tie the game before Blum's decisive blow pushed West Salem into the championship game. Farrell struck out twelve and allowed only two hits in his complete game victory.

Lake Oswego, which had defeated its first two opponents at the state tournament by a 24-0 margin, then was eliminated by a streaking Pendleton team that won four consecutive loser's bracket games following their opening round loss.

West Salem's state tournament victory advanced the Oregon champions to the new Northwest Region tournament in San Bernardino, CA. West Salem rebounded from an opening round loss to Laramie (Wyoming) to advance to the region championship game before losing 5-4 to Bainbridge Island (Washington).
