Summary:
For the second consecutive year, Oil City advanced to the state championship game, but came away empty-handed. Newtown-Edgmont edged Latrobe in the first semifinal game, and Oil City and Wyoming then played to a 5-5 tie before darkness forced officials to suspend the game after eight innings. After a scoreless ninth the following morning, Oil City rallied for three runs in the tenth to pull out the win. Later that day, Newtown-Edgmont's Michael Allen nearly single-handedly ousted Oil City. Allen homered twice, and also turned in an 11-strikeout, five hit performance on the mound. Daniel Kelly, Thomas Rotolini, and Steven Orenshaw also had two hits for N-E.
Newtown-Edgmont later won the East Region tournament and advanced to the World Series, where it finished third following a 4-1 semifinal loss to eventual champion West Tokyo (Japan) LL.
