Williamsport's Newberry Little League brought a local flavor to the 1969 Little League World Series by capturing state and regional tournament titles. In the state tournament at Kittanning, Newberry overcame slow starts and early deficits in both of its victories. In the semifinals, St. Therese jumped to a 1-0 lead with three first inning singles, but managed only one more hit against Newberry pitcher Steve Karney the rest of the way. Newberry rallied for a pair of runs in the second and iced the win with two in the third. In the second, Allen Reed walked, Mike Prowant singled, and Harry Sechler reached on an infield single to load the bases. Reed and Prowant both scored on a wild pitch when the catcher's throw sailed over the St. Therese pitcher's head. Randy Vaughn's two-run double in the third completed the scoring.
In the title game, Newberry pitcher Don Cohick allowed a pair of first inning runs and walked the leadoff batter in the second before settling down and using his sweeping curveball to retire the last 15 batters he faced. Joe Saboski led Newberry's offensive attack with a first inning homer and third inning triple; Cohick's sacrifice fly after the Saboski triple gave Newberry a 3-2 lead that it never relinquished.
Newberry became the first Williamsport team ever to win a Pennsylvania state tournament (Williamsport Maynard's 1947 World Series title preceded the first Pennsylvania state tournament by a year). At the Eastern Region Tournament in Bellevue, New Jersey, Newberry defeated Southington South Little League (Connecticut) and Smithtown Little League (New York) to capture the title and advance to the Little League World Series, where it eventually finished fifth.
