Mike Shannon powered and pitched Montoursville to its second state title in three years. Shannon struck out 16 batters and snapped a 3-3 tie with a fourth inning homer to lift Montoursville past Hermitage in its opener, and again stymied Hermitage by firing a 15 strikeout two-hitter in the title game.
Shannon and Jason Bennett (who scattered four hits against Jessup Carbino in the winner's bracket finals) allowed only one walk in three state tournament games; Montoursville pitchers had not allowed any walks in the club's two previous sectional games.
By contrast, Montoursville benefited from ten walks issued by Hermitage pitchers in the opening round meeting, while two walks keyed a rally that staked Montoursville to an early 2-0 lead against Jessup.
Montoursville won a pair of games at the Eastern Region Tournament in Bristol, Connecticut, before falling 4-1 to the Dover North Little League (New Hampshire) in the championship game.
