Summary:
Bret Sebade's three-run home run gave his team a four-run edge four batters into the game, and Aliso Viejo National Little League cruised to a 9-2 victory over Tustin Eastern Little League in the deciding game of the Southern California Little League championship series at Los Alamos Sports Park in Murrieta.
The win was Aliso Viejo's second in as many games in the best-of-three series, and advanced the Orange County league to the West Region tournament in San Bernardino.
"We knew we wanted to come out and play hard early," said Aliso Viejo manager Dave Cole. "We wanted to come out and put some pressure on them."
The early lead was more than enough for Aliso Viejo pitcher Justin Fowler, who struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits in a complete game effort.
"Justin Fowler is our ace, and quite frankly, I don't know if I've seen a Little Leaguer play better than him," said Cole.
"He's pitched in a lot of games, and he has the ability to up his game to the event," added the Aliso Viejo manager.
Fowler also showed his mettle at the plate throughout the two-game series, collecting five hits in six at-bats and scoring seven runs. He keyed Aliso Viejo's first inning push with a leadoff double and added an opposite field two-run homer in the second.
Steve Harrison followed Fowler's game-opening hit with a walk, and Calvin Westfall delivered a run-scoring single. The left-handed hitting Sebade then drove a pitch beyond the outfield fence in straightaway center field, giving his team a welcome early cushion.
"Getting up fast felt good after the way (the first) game went with all the lead changes," said Cole.
The previous day, Aliso Viejo needed a two-run rally in the top of the sixth inning to edge Tustin Eastern, 10-9, in a game where the lead changed hands four times. The District 55 champions used five different pitchers to grind out the win, and escaped a two-on, one-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning when Fowler dove to snare a line drive from his shortstop position, then raced to the bag and doubled a Tustin runner off second base.
"I've never seen anything like that," said a relieved Cole after his team escaped the threat. "It was a made-to-order double play that we needed desparately."
Aliso Viejo National broke to an early 5-0 lead in the series opener, scoring once in the first inning and adding four more in the second. Harrison's run-scoring single to left scored Fowler, who had doubled, and Sebade later added a two-run triple.
Tustin Eastern closed the gap when Brett Mellon and Nathan Bruno each hit two-run homers in the second. They took the lead in the fourth, when Kyle Molnar's solo home run tied the game, and Alec Propp and Bobby Teel each drove in runs. Aliso Viejo briefly drew even, and while Tustin reclaimed the lead with a run in the fifth, the District 30 champions managed just the one run after loading the bases with one out.
Aliso Viejo moved in front for good in the sixth. Bryce Keeler delivered a one-out single and moved to third before scoring on a passed ball. Westfall followed with an RBI single down the right field line to pull his team into the lead.
The next day, Aliso Viejo's instant offense put the evental champions in front from the start.
"We didn't expect last night's win to carry us tonight," said Cole.
Aliso Viejo, which reached the divisional tournament for the third time in five years, advanced to the championship series by rallying in the final inning to defeat Riverside's Magnolia Little League, 3-2, in the South Sub-Divisional championship game. Magnolia Center carried a 2-1 lead through five innings, before Aliso Viejo tied the game on Kenji Teshima's sharp single to right field, and won it after capitalizing on a controversial call. Teshima advanced to second on a throw to the plate following his single, and was awarded third base when the umpires ruled a fielder interfered with him in the basepath. He then scored the deciding run on a passed ball.
The win was Aliso Viejo's ninth in a row, and eleventh overall. Aliso Viejo had dropped a 7-4 decision to Laguna Hills Little League in the double-elimination District 55 tournament, but came back to defeat the same team by 11-1 and 17-5 margins in the championship series before sweeping through sectional and sub-divisional play.
Tustin Eastern was forced to climb through the bottom bracket of the North Sub-Divisional tournament following a 6-3 loss to LaVerne American Little League in their first game at the tournament. Tustin Eastern later avenged the defeat with a 13-3 victory in the elimination bracket final, then upended Goleta's Dos Pueblos Little League, 18-5 and 7-4, to advance to the championship series and cement the league's best-ever finish in the international tournament. The league's 11-year-old all-star team also made an extended run in that age division's tournament, winning district and sectional titles before falling in the North Sub-Divisional championship game.
