They built a region headquarters.
Little League Baseball announced the creation of a new Southwestern Region at the 2001 Little League Congress in Ottawa, Ontario, and named Waco as the new region's headquarters. The region, which encompasses states that previously competed in the Southern and Western Region tournaments, hosts a championship tournament in every baseball and softball division, and sends a region champion to each division's World Series tournament.
State champions from Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma compete in the Southwestern Region tournament, along with divisional champions from East and West Texas. The tournament employs an Olympic-style pool format in which each team plays a series of round-robin games against other tournament qualifiers. The top two finishers in each pool advance to single-elimination semifinal round competition. Semifinal winners then face off in the region championship game.
ESPN2 will televise this year's Southwestern Region championship game live, as it has done for the championship game of every U.S. region tournament since 1997.
