In the first double-elimination Texas state tournament, Houston Sagemont-Beverly Hills dropped a 6-1 decision to Oak Ridge-The Woodlands National, then came back later in the tournament to beat them twice for the title. In the tourney's final game, Oak Ridge pitcher Chad Armstrong took a perfect game into the sixth inning, but three errors allowed Sagemont-Beverly Hills to score the game's only run. Brian Coyle pitched a complete game shutout for the victors. Texas officials were able to change the state tournament's format from single- to double-elimination by reducing the number of teams that compete in the tournament from sixteen to eight, and by replacing the two-team bi-district matchups that directly precede the state tournament with four-team sectional tournaments.
