Summary:

Pearland Maroon won its second Texas East championship in three years by sweeping past three opponents in the state tournament at Randy Womble Field in Tyler.

Pearland opened and closed the tournament with wins over District 18 winner Sweeny Little League, and also defeated College Station Little League in the state tournament. The league won eleven of its twelve games en route to the Texas East championship, with the only loss coming to the league's other charter, Pearland White Little League, in the District 15 tournament. The two Pearland leagues have combined to win three of the most recent four Texas East titles.

Sweeny grabbed an early lead in the state championship game, which Pearland went on to win by a 9-6 score. Sweeny's Matt Finley drilled a three-run homer to give his team an early 3-1 lead, and, after Pearland zoomed in front by a 4-3 margin in the top of the second. Jackson Kiddy homered to pull Sweeny level. But Pearland scored five runs over the next three innings, and held on despite Nicholas Nail's two-run homer in the sixth.

Pearland outhit Sweeny, 12-5, during the game. Pitcher Tyler Langston allowed four runs in 4-1/3 innings of work, and earned the victory.

"Pitching and defense really got us through this tournament," said Pearland manager Joe Deleon. Pearland outscored its state tournament opponents by a 26-9 margin.

"We just had too many errors," said Sweeny manager Dale Homniok. "We had three home runs and we smashed the ball, but just could not produce enough runs tonight."

The win was Pearland's second over Sweeny at the state tournament. Pearland defeated their championship game opponents, 4-2, in the tournament's opening round. They then eased past College Station, 13-1 in five innings, to secure their championship game berth.

Sweeny rebounded from their opening round loss, and earned a championship round berth after edging North Shore Little League, 7-6, and then eliminating College Station, 10-4.
