(August 16, 2009) -- Chula Vista's Park View Little League last won a district championship in 1974, but this year, they are headed to South Williamsport. Park View slammed four home runs tonight, and capitalized on a string of bases on balls to snap a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning and pull away from Northern California champion Lakeside Little League in the championship game of the West Region tournament in San Bernardino. Park View jumped in front on a pair of first inning home runs, but Lakeside tied the game in the third before the late surge vaulted the Southern California team into the Little League World Series. Park View next meets Great Lakes Region winner Logan County/Russellville (Kentucky) Little League at Lamade Stadium in South Williamsport on Saturday night.

Logan County/Russellville was one of five teams to wrap up region championships on Saturday, as the Kentucky contingent completed its comeback from an 0-2 start in the Great Lakes tournament with a 10-3 win over Indiana's Bartholomew County National Little League at Stokely Field in Indianapolis Saturday evening. Logan County/Russellvile becomes the third league from Kentucky's District 1 to reach the Little League World Series in the past six years. Earlier in the day, Iowa's Urbandale Little League clinched its first trip to South Williamsport by edging Daniel Boone National (Columbia, Missouri), 7-6, in the Midwest Region finale on the same field, while Peabody Western (Massachusetts) ended the New England Region tournament with a walk-off grand slam in a 11-7 victory over Lincoln (Rhode Island) Little League. A pair of Pacific Northwest teams also claimed series berths. Mercer Island (Washington) used a late surge to pull away in an 8-3 championship game victory over Parrish (Oregon) Little League in the Northwest Region championship game, while north of the border, Vancouver's Hastings Community Little League struck gold in Val d'Or, Quebec, claiming British Columbia's fifth consecutive Canadian Region championship with a 9-2 win over Ontario's Turtle Club Little League.

(August 14, 2009) -- Legendary Mitch Stadium sparkled tonight as it took its turn in the spotlight during Ceredo-Kenova's (West Virginia) short window as the temporary home for the Southeastern Region tournament. Georgia champion Warner Robins American Little League capitalized on a game-turning play to rally for three runs in the fifth inning and defeat Chantilly American (Virginia), 6-3, in the region championship game. Georgia snapped a 3-3 tie in the fifth when two runs scored on a grounder that appeared to glance off a baserunner's foot. The winners then shut down the Virginia offense for the final two innings to become Georgia's fourth-ever Little League World Series qualifier. Many of Warner Robins players had won the Tournament of State Champions in the 9-10 year old division on the same field two years previously.

Chula Vista's Park View Little League hopes to join the Middle Georgia team in South Williamsport, and the Southern California champions moved one step closer last night by thumping Nevada's Legacy Little League, 15-2 in four innings at the West Region semifinals in San Bernardino, California. Park View launched six more home runs last night, including a walk-off grand slam, to give them 35 in their five games at Al Houghton Stadium. Park View next faces Northern California winner Lakeside Little League in the region championship game. Lakeside scored twice in the top of the sixth to edge Arrowhead (Glendale, Arizona) Little League, 9-8, in tonight's other semifinal game. The all-California finale is set for is 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time Sunday evening.

(August 13, 2009) -- San Antonio's McAllister Park American is headed to South Williamsport. The Texas West champions overcame an early 4-1 deficit yesterday and rallied past Bridge City (Texas East) Little League, 6-4, to win the Southwestern Region tournament at Marvin Norcross Stadium in Waco. McAllister Park trailed 4-2 through four innings before scoring three times in the fifth to reverse the deficit and earn the league's first-ever berth in the Little League World Series. McAllister Park American opens play in South Williamsport against the New England Region champion one week from Friday.

Elsewhere, Mercer Island (Washington) continued to run roughshod over its competition at the Northwest Region tournament in San Bernardino, and rolled into the region championship game tonight with a four inning, 15-1 victory over Sitka (Alaska) Little League. The Washington winners have now defeated each of the five other teams in the region tournament by a combined 62-4 margin, have scored in 15 of 20 offensive innings, and have yet to play a game that required the full six innings. Next up is a rematch with Oregon winner Parrish Little League, which eliminated Boulder-Arrowhead (Montana), 9-7, in today's other semifinal round game.

(August 12, 2009) -- Georgia's Warner Robins American Little League rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning today to cement its return to the Southeastern Region tournament championship game for the second time in three years. Tullahoma National (Tennessee) shut down the Georgia champions through five innings, but Warner Robins rallied for three runs to seal the win. The Georgians -- who won the Tournament of State Champions in the 9-10 year old division during the same summer that their 11-12 year old all-star team was winning the 2007 Little League World Series -- now prepare to face Virginia's Chantilly American Little League in the championship game at Mitch Stadium in Ceredo-Kenova, West Virginia, on Friday night. Chantilly American downed Jackson (Alabama) by an 8-4 score in today's first semifinal round game to become Virginia's first region tournament finalist in eight years. Game time on Friday is 8:00 p.m. local time.

(August 11, 2009) -- Park View Little League wrapped up pool competition with its fourth win in as many games at the West Region tournament Tuesday evening, as the Southern California champions rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to down Nevada winner Legacy Little League, 10-5, at Al Houghton Stadium. Park View surrendered a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, in the top of the first inning, then slammed six of its own over the course of the next six innings to overpower the Nevada team. Park View has now slammed 27 home runs in its four pool contests, and will have today off while its semifinal round opponent is determined based on the day's results. Northern California winner Lakeside Little League has the inside track on the top seed in the West, having allowed just two runs while winning its first three games. Lakeside tried to wrap up the top seed this afternoon when it squares off with Hawaii's Central East Maui Little League.

(August 10, 2009) -- New Jersey's Somerset Hills Little League moved to 3-0 at the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament in Bristol, Connecticut, today, holding off a late charge by Delaware winner M-O-T Little League to post a 7-6 victory. Somerset Hills broke to an early 5-2 lead and extended the edge to 7-2 before a late Delaware push provided the final margin of victory. The Garden State champions are now a perfect 20-0 in the international tournament, and are idle on Tuesday before entertaining New York winner South Shore National in a regionally televised game Wednesday evening.

A pair of teams earned semifinal round berths today at the Southwestern Region tournament in Waco. White Hall National (Arkansas) pulled away late to top Albuquerque's Eastdale Little League, 10-4, in an afternoon contest, before Biloxi (Mississippi) Little League earned its second region semifinal berth in four years by holding off South Lake Charles (Louisiana), 4-3. Both winners extended their seasons and will face Texas leagues in the semifinal round on Tuesday. Biloxi clashes with Texas East winner Bridge City Little League, then White Hall takes the field against Texas West champion McAllister Park American from San Antonio. The two semifinal winners meet Thursday evening with a trip to South Williamsport on the line.

(August 8, 2009) -- Texas West champion McAllister Park American became the first team to clear the all-important two-win bar at the Southwestern Region tournament in Waco today, as the San Antonio crew eased past Oklahoma's Tulsa National Little League, 12-1, at Marvin Norcross Stadium. All teams with two or more wins in pool competition advance to the next phase of play in Waco, and either New Mexico's Eastdale Little League or Texas East winner Bridge City will soon join McAllister Park as the two 1-0 teams will clash Sunday afternoon. South Lake Charles (Louisiana) also has an opportunity to secure its place in the next phase when it entertains McAllister Park Sunday night.

Two wins doesn't guarantee a semifinal round berth at the Midwest Region tournament in Indianapolis, but it does mean you'll be in the hunt for one. Nebraska winner Blair Little League earned its second win in as many games today, scoring three times in the fifth inning to down East Tonka South (Minnesota), 5-2, at Stokely Field. Iowa winner Urbandale did the same in the late game, scoring seven times in the top of the first inning and capitalizing on seven errors in a 16-0 mercy rule-shortened win over Missouri's Daniel Boone National Little League. The two unbeaten teams have today off before facing one another on Monday afternoon.

Elsewhere, Washington champion Mercer Island Little League started off strongly in the Northwest Region tournament with a 10-0, four inning win over Parrish (Oregon), while host league Val D'Or Little League debuted with a 4-2 win over Quebec champion Valleyfield as action commenced at the Canadian championships in Northern Quebec.

(August 3, 2009) -- Just two days after crashing to an 18-0, mercy rule-shortened loss in the opening game of the best-of-three Southern California championship series, Chula Vista's Park View Little League is the last SoCal team standing. Park View evened the best-of-three series with a win Sunday afternoon, then outslugged Torrance, 19-12, in the deciding game tonight at Encino Little League's field. The game was the highest-scoring Southern California championship game in history, and made Park View the first Chula Vista league to win the divisional since South Bay Little League in 1982. Park View now has three days to get ready for the West Region tournament in San Bernardino, where they face Utah's Cedar American Little League in the tournament's first game.

West Virginia's rain-plagued state tournament also wrapped up this evening, after weather-related postponements extended the tournament for several days. Hurricane Little League -- an aptly named charter given the tournament's weather challenges -- claimed its second consecutive state crown after blanking Grant County this evening, 3-0, at Nicholas County Veterans Memorial Park in Summersville. Last year's Hurricane team headed to Florida for region tournament competition, but this year's team will be a bit closer to home, as Ceredo-Kenova Little League is playing host to this year's Southeastern Region tournament. Hurricane entertains Virginia champion Chantilly American in the last of four games to be played when the tournament opens on Saturday.

(July 20, 2009) -- A pair of teams made the most of second chances over the weekend, avenging earlier defeats and claiming state championships. Cedar American swept a pair of games from Snow Canyon Green on Saturday, winning 8-5 and 7-6 to earn their second consecutive Utah state championship and a berth in the West Region tournament next month. Cedar American had fallen to Snow Canyon in the winner's bracket final, but claimed three wins on the tournament's final two days to retain their crown.

Cherokee Community Little League made it three titles in a row in Kansas by defeating Riverton, 12-7, on Saturday in Baxter Springs. Riverton had defeated Cherokee during pool competition, but the eventual champions shook off the loss and swept three games, including a pair from Riverton, in the tournament's second phase. Cherokee now starts preparing for the Midwest Region tournament, where they tangle with the Missouri champions in the tournament's opening game on August 6.

(July 18, 2009) -- Defending champion Urbandale and last year's runner-up Davenport Northwest were among the winners last night as play opened in the Iowa state tournament at Urbandale's complex. Urbandale needed extra innings to subdue Des Moines' Grandview Little League, while Davenport dispatched Boone National, 14-6. The top two teams in the six-team tournament meet in the championship game on Wednesday night.

Heavy rain prevented a full slate of games from being played in Pennsylvania last night, as many of the games in the state's southern half were washed out. A few sites did get the full slate of games in, though, including Section 1, where Butler Township and French Creek Valley American scored opening night wins in the round-robin tournament at Cranberry Little League's field. Jersey Shore/GSV and Shikellemy Acorn nabbed wins on the opening night of Section 4 action in Pottsville, while West Hazleton and Council Rock Newtown pocketed wins in Section 6. Weather-permitting, all eight sections will be back in action again today and tomorrow.

(July 13, 2009) -- There's a new sheriff in town in our nation's capital, as Northwest Washington upended Capitol City by a 5-2 score in the final game of the District of Columbia championship tournament this evening at the Fort Lincoln Baseball Complex in Northeast Washington. Capitol City had won the last 20 D.C. championships, and had never lost to a District team before Northwest Washington claimed a 14-5 decision earlier this weekend in the winner's bracket final. Capitol City forced the tournament to a deciding game with a win last night, but Northwest took the rubber match tonight to advance to the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament in Bristol, Connecticut.

A little further north on Interstate 95, West New York American took the long road, but came away with the New Jersey District 7 crown tonight following a 5-3 win over North Bergen North. The Americans had dropped their opener in the fifteen-team, double-elimination tournament, then won eight consecutive games through the bottom bracket to claim their first district title since 1998. Next up is the Section 2 tournament in Lyndhurst beginning next week.

(July 12, 2009) -- District championships are starting to be decided across the country, including in Southern California, where Spring Valley Lake claimed the first district championship at any age level in the league's history with a 2-0 victory over Victorville Ribbons to claim the District 49 title. Spring Valley Lake rode the fifteen strikeout, two-hit effort of its pitcher, and got all of the offense it needed with a two-run homer in the bottom the third inning. Next up is the Section 8 tournament, where the new champions will tangle with three other district winners from Inland Empire districts.

A little further West, Central East Maui made it three straight wins in the Hawaii District 3 tournament, and clinched a return trip to the state tournament with a 9-0 title game decision over Maui Upcountry at the latter team's field. Last year's Central East Maui squad defeated eventual Little League World Series champion Waipio Little League in an early round state tournament meeting en route to a third place finish; this year's club squares off with four other Hawaiian district champions at Aiea Little League's field on Oahu in a little more than a week's time. Meanwhile, Chiba City Little League broke out the big bats, scoring seventeen runs in semifinal and championship game wins over the weekend to earn its second Japanese Region title in five years. Chiba City scored six times in the top of the third inning to break open a scoreless game in a 17-3 win over Omiya Little League in the semifinal round, then returned hours later to score in each of the game's first five innings in a 17-4 title game decision over Izumisano. Izumisano matched Chiba City's two-run first inning, but the eventual champions added six runs in the second and then again in the fourth to run out the victory.

(July 6, 2009) -- Parkway National opened defense of its 2008 state title by topping Newton East 8-2 as play opened tonight in the Massachusetts District 10 tournament. Also winning their openers were Newton North, Parkway American, and Newton Central. Meanwhile, Walpole American -- Massachusetts' state champion and a Little League World Series qualifier in 2007 -- kicked off pool competition in nearby District 11 with a 13-5 decision over Ashland Sunday evening. Next up for Walpole is a date with Needham West, which hopes to rebound from a 10-0 loss to Wellesley North in its opener.

While most of Massachusetts' district tournaments are in their early stages, Media took home the crown tonight in Pennsylvania's District 19, edging Aston-Middletown, 6-5, at Media's diamond. The winners now cool their heels for the next week and a half before opening Section 8 action in Pottstown against the District 27 champion. Media becomes the second team to clear district competition in the Keystone state, as Solanco claimed the District 23 title last night.

(July 4, 2009) -- Some of the state's districts are still a week away from starting play, but that didn't stop a pair of teams from clinching their spots in the Oregon state tournament in Eugene later this month. The Dalles rebounded from a loss in its opening pool game, and downed Bend South 5-2 last week to claim its first District 5 crown in more than a decade, while homestanding Grants Pass National did the same in District 8. Across the country, Seminole scored ten or more runs in each of its four games and ran out to its fourth consecutive Florida District 5 title, while Austin's Northwest Little League claimed the crown in Texas East's District 11.

Elsewhere, a trio of former champions are among the survivors as the Japanese Region tournament is down to its final four teams. Chiba City jumped to a 3-0 first inning lead and dispatched Tokyo winner Musashi Fuchu, 6-2, in the opening round, then returned later in the day to send off Sasebo Chuo, 11-7. Seya Little League broke open a tight game with a pair of late four run rallies to eliminate last year's runner up, Matsusaka, 10-2 in its quarterfinal round matchup, while Omiya survived an extra inning scare in the first round before easing past Nagoya Kita, 9-2, in another quarterfinal round draw. Omiya now meets Chiba City next Saturday in one semifinal round encounter, while Seya entertains Kansai winner Izumisano in the other half of the draw. The two winners meet later in the day to determine Japan's representative at the Little League World Series.

(June 28, 2009) -- Newberry Little League remains the last Williamsport-area team to reach the Little League World Series, and this year's edition of the league's all-star team started off on the right foot yesterday, toppling Nippenose Valley, 9-4, as action kicked off in Pennsylvania's District 12 tournament. Three of the opening day's six games were decided by a single run, as Jersey Shore/GSV, Hepburn-Lycoming, and Montoursville had just enough to hold off their opponents. Next up for Newberry is Keystone, which had little trouble dispatching Brandon by a 16-2 score in four innings. The District 12 contenders are aiming for the district championship game, which as in recent years will be held in one of the stadiums at Little League International's headquarters complex. This year's finale is in Volunteer Stadium, and the winner moves on to the Section 3 tournament.

(June 27, 2009) -- Many districts begin play this weekend, and results are beginning to trickle in from across the country. On one coast, Somerset Hills and Watchung are the only teams sporting unblemished records in New Jersey's District 19, while three time zones away, last year's Southern California runner-up, Tustin Eastern, was among seven opening day winners in District 30. Further up the coast, Arroyo Grande Valley is looking for its fifth District 50 title in six years, and took a step in the right direction by downing homestanding Atascadero by a 16-3 margin at the latter team's Paloma Park. The New Jersey entrants are aiming for their state tournament in Garfield later this month, while the SoCal hopefuls are battling toward a berth in the best 2-of-3 Southern California divisional championship series in Encino.

(June 15, 2009) -- U.S. leagues are officially able to announce the rosters for this year's all-star teams today, which means the international tournament season is about to begin in earnest. For the fourteenth consecutive year, we will bring you coverage of tournament action in the major baseball division from across our coverage area in the U.S. and Canada, beginning with early round district games and culminating in the final pitches leading up to the Little League World Series. In just a few short weeks, the field of several thousand hopefuls will be narrowed down to the sixteen teams that realize their dream of reaching Williamsport. The Little League World Series opens on August 21.

Due to the volume of games during district tournament play, this year we will in some instances be providing links to coverage on other web sites rather than listing results here. As always, we rely on our visitors to help us stay up-to-date, so if you can provide results or pairings that are not covered on this site, please contact the Unpage.

(June 7, 2009) -- A year after exiting the tournament following a surprise semifinal round loss to Adelaide Southern, Waverley toppled the same team on Sunday to win the Australian national championship at the Surfers Paradise Baseball Club in Queensland. Adelaide struck the initial blow with a run in the top of the first, but the Wildcats scored multiple times in each of their three at-bats to run away with the title. Next stop for the Aussie champions is the Asia-Pacific Region tournament in Chinese Taipei in July.

Tournament officials fought past inclement weather and managed to squeeze in at least an abbreviated version of all scheduled consolation games earlier in the day. The Hornsby Eagles claimed third place with a 10-5 win over Perth Metro East. and the Desert Rebels from Alice Springs downed Newcastle, 10-1, to finish in fifth place.

(June 6, 2009) -- Waverley took command with a four run third inning, and went on to down Perth Metro East, 10-3, in the Australian semifinals this afternoon at Sir Bruce Small Park on the Gold Coast in Queensland. The Wildcats finished fourth in last year's Aussie championships, but broke through to the finals thanks to a trio of multi-run rallies in the late innings of today's contest. They'll be joined by South Australian winner Adelaide Southern, which overcame a early 3-0 deficit, then held on in the sixth to topple the Hornsby Eagles, 5-4, in the other semifinal round matchup. Waverley and Adelaide Southern now meet at 2:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, with the winner moving on to represent Australia in the Asia-Pacific Region tournament.

(June 5, 2009) -- We're down to the final four in Australia today, as the four pool winners all stayed on course with quarterfinal round wins in the Australian national tournament on the Gold Coast. Adelaide Southern prevailed in the day's closest game, edging Brisbane Metro 2-0 to bounce the Queenslanders from the national tournament for the second consecutive year. Adelaide now faces the Hornsby Eagles in one semifinal round matchup, while Perth Metro East and the Waverly Wildcats tangle in the other. The two winners meet for all the marbles on Sunday.

(June 4, 2009) -- Surfers' Paradise was somewhat of a baseball paradise today, as a dozen teams from throughout Australia helped open that country's national tournament at Sir Bruce Small Park in Benowa, Queensland. Adelaide Southern Little League hopes to improve on last year's runner-up finish, and started on the right foot with a pair of four inning victories to move into the quarterfinal round. The Waverley Wildcats and Hornsby Eagles also secured quarterfinal round berths with a pair of victories, while either Perth Metro East or Ringwood will join them after the conclusion of their suspended game tomorrow morning. The Australian championships run through Sunday, with the winner moving on to the Asia-Pacific Region tournament.

The Japanese Region tournament is just a month away, and half of the tournament's slots remain up for grabs following this past weekend's results. 2003 Little League World Series champion Musashi Fuchu secured its place in the region tournament with a win this weekend, as did Matsusaka and Omiya, who both reached the semifinal round in last year's regional. District tournament games continue this coming weekend, and the sixteen-team Japanese Region tournament opens on July 4.

(February 13, 2009) -- The forecast calls for 36 degree temperatures in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania today, but it will be a pleasant 64 degrees some 10,400 miles to the Southwest, where the 2009 international tournament kicks off in Adelaide, Australia. Last year's Australian runner-up, Southern Adelaide Districts Little League, hopes to earn its second consecutive state championship when it entertains Northern Adelaide Districts in a best 2-of-3 series that will determine the South Australia state championship. The winner will advance to the Australian national tournament at a venue to be announced, and that tournament winner also moves on as we ladder up to the Little League World Series.

North American teams won't begin their march toward South Williamsport until June, but other Australian states begin play around Easter weekend, and Japanese leagues begin their district clashes in April as the wheels on the international side of the draw slowly begin to turn.

We'll be back in the coming weeks with continuing coverage of results in the international portions of our coverage area, as well as wrap-ups and a look back at 2008 tournament play.
