Summary:

Rayne Supple struck out eleven batters over five innings, then started a game-ending double play to help lift his Shelburne Little League all-star team to a 4-1 victory over Bennington in the 2010 Vermont state championship game at Schifilliti Park in Burlington.

The win gave Shelburne its first state championship in the major baseball division since 2005, and advanced the new Vermont champions into the New England Region tournament in Bristol, Connecticut.

Shelburne led for much of the championship game thanks to a pair of early home runs, but Bennington pressed back after Supple switched positions in the top of the sixth inning, and loaded the bases on a trio of one-out walks. Atreal Peneiro singled to drive in one run, before Supple gloved a sharply hit grounder at short, stepped on second to force a baserunner and then threw to first to complete a rally-killing double play.

"That was a big play," said Shelburne manager Bill Supple. "We were kind of on the ropes there. If that ball bounces through, it's a different game."

Shelburne opened the scoring in the second inning, when Henry Conroy deposited a two-strike curveball over the left center field fence with a runner aboard. Rayne Supple extended the advantage in the third with a 300-foot solo shot to straightaway center field, and Shelburne added a run in the fourth when Shea Ireland doubled and then scored on William Hesslink's single.

Supple made the most of the support, keeping Bennington off the scoreboard and allowing just one hit over five innings before reaching his pitch count limit.

The win was Shelburne's second over Bennington at the state tournament, as Conroy struck out 14 batters in his team's 6-2 victory in the winner's bracket final. Bennington grabbed an early 2-1 advantage, before Rayne Supple led off the third inning with a single and Andrew Pitcher tied the game by lining a run-scoring double off the left center field fence. The next inning, Supple again singled before scoring the go-ahead run on Ireland's base hit. Shelburne added an insurance run when Pitcher followed with a hit to right center field that scored Ireland, and in the sixth, Pitcher delivered his third hit of the game with a single that plated Rayne Supple.

Bennington had reached double-digits in each of its other two state tournament contests, easing past Barre Community Little League by a 12-2 score in the tournament's opening game and then pushing the same team out of the tournament with a 21-2 win in the elimination bracket final. Bennington collected 23 hits in the second win over Barre, including three-run homers by Tyler Champagne, Patrick Powers and Pineiro, and also a two-run shot by Shea Mooney.

Shelburne had rallied late to claim the win in its opening round game, an 8-3 victory over St. Albans Little League. St. Albans led 3-2 in the fourth inning when a two-out triple from Conroy and a subsequent single by Alex Kent knotted the score. The next inning, Shelburne strung together five base hits as part of a five-run burst that sealed the victory.

"I couldn't be more proud," Bill Supple said of his team after the tournament's final game. "They are a very coachable bunch, and they are a much better group than they were six weeks ago. We are looking forward to seeing what we can do against the other states."

Shelburne reached the semifinal round at the New England Region tournament before dropping a 5-4 decision to Cumberland National (Rhode Island) Little League.
