The top four teams advance to the semifinal round.

Ties are broken based on records in head-to-head competition among tied teams. If a clear winner cannot be determined from head-to-head results, the tie is broken by calculating the ratio of runs allowed to defensive innings played for all teams involved in the tie. The team with the lowest runs-per-defensive-inning ratio advances.

In the event of a tie involving three or more teams, once the initial tie is broken, the remaining tied teams are again compared on head-to-head record to determine if a clear winner can be identified. If no clear winner can be identified from head-to-head results among the remaining tied teams, the runs-per-defensive-inning ratio is again used. This process is repeated until all ties have been broken.

Wisconsin State Championship Game (Saturday, July 30)

Burlington 5, West Madison American 1 (TITLE)

Burlington Little League waited 51 years to claim its first state championship in the major baseball division.

The league needed just one more summer to earn its second.

Burlington slammed four home runs in the state championship game, and dispatched West Madison American Little League by a 6-1 score at Brighton Dale Park in Salem.

With the win, Burlington advanced to the Great Lakes Region tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana for the second consecutive year.

Burlington held a precarious lead in the early innings against West Madison, which it had already defeated 13-4 on the opening day of the week-long tournament. Dale Damon's homer gave the District 6 champions a 1-0 lead that Burlington held through three innings. Aaron Mutter and Jacob Lindemann added solo shots of their own in the fourth, and after Burlington tallied two more runs in the fifth, Liam Safer capped the day with another home run in the sixth.

Billy Wilson's solo home run leading off the bottom of the sixth inning gave West Madison its only run.

Mutter kept West Madison in check through five innings to earn the victory, and Damon retired the side after Wilson's home run in the sixth to seal the victory.

"We're pretty good," said Burlington manager Don Golon after the win. "We don't know how good we are -- we'll find out starting Friday (at the region tournament)."

The title game victory was Burlington's eleventh in a row against Wisconsin teams since the start of the international tournament. At the state tournament, Burlington scored in double-digits in each of its six games leading up to the championship game. The squad posted a 63-11 run differential while sweeping the state's five other district champions during round-robin competition, then eliminated Appleton Einstein Little League, 10-1, in the semifinal round.

Like in the championship game, Burlington claimed an early 1-0 lead in its semifinal round win, before adding three runs in the third inning and four more in the sixth.

Three Burlington players had brothers who were members of the league's state championship team the prior year, and many of the 2011 Burlington players were also members of the league's 10-11 year old all-star team that won the state championship in 2010. The team made just four errors from the start of international tournament play through the state championship game.

West Madison American, which won the 2009 Wisconsin title, reached the state championship game for the third time in a six year span. The District 4 representatives won three of their five round-robin games, and avenged one of their two defeats with a 5-0 victory over Wausau American Little League in the semifinal round.
