Summary:
Brian Bratspis and Mike Adams delivered run-scoring singles in the second inning, and Margate City Little League never trailed while edging Morristown National Little League, 4-2, in the state championship game at John Connelly Field. In the previous day's semifinal round matchup, first baseman Claude Knafo and left fielder Billy Wolfson drove solo home runs in the fourth inning as Margate overcame an early deficit to rally past Manasquan/Brielle Little League, 2-1.
Margate was making its fourth state tournament appearance in 19 years, and became the first Section 4 team to win New Jersey since the same league did so in 1965.
Runner-up Morristown National reached the state tournament for the first time in the league's history, and would go on to make ten state tournament appearances in the fifteen year span between 1980 and 1994.
