Summary:

Mike Hilliard's three-run homer in the top of the eleventh inning lifted DuBois Little League to its third consecutive extra-inning victory, as DuBois edged Berwyn-Paoli Little League, 4-2, in the longest state title game in Pennsylvania tournament history.

In the championship game, DuBois' Mike Gray (five hits, twelve strikeouts) and Berwyn-Paoli's Tim Brown (five hits, nine strikeouts) were both in top form. Both strung together shutouts for the maximum allowed nine innings before giving way to relievers. DuBois, which was hitless for the first 5-2/3 innings, finally scored in the top of the tenth when Chris Spangler drew a bases-loaded walk that forced in Hilliard. Berwyn-Paoli responsed -- and nearly won the game -- when Arash Bonakdar's double off the left field fence narrowly missed clearing the fence and instead scored Brown. Finally, in the eleventh, DuBois' Ryan Smith singled with one out, and Tom Thiebaud singled. After a forceout, Hilliard drove a line shot over the left-field fence to drive home the winning runs.

DuBois had also needed 11 innings to defeat Williamsport's Brandon Little League in the Section 2 title game. Berwyn-Paoli had won a Section 3 semifinal game against Lehigh that had been suspended due to darkness with the game tied 4-4 after 11 innings.

In the semifinals, DuBois executed a double steal with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Ingomar 3-2. After giving up an early homer to Ingomar's Brian Moffitt and falling behind 2-0, DuBois pitcher Erin Henry settled down to retire 11 of the last 12 hitters she faced. Chris Smiley tied it with a two-run homer in the fourth before DuBois won the game in extra innings. Henry was the first female starting pitcher in Pennsylvania state tournament history. Berwyn-Paoli overcame an early 2-0 defecit to beat Shippensburg Area Little League, 9-4, in the other semifinal game.

Shippensburg's roster included several eleven year olds who played prominent roles in the team's tournament run. These players returned in 1990 and led Shippensburg to the United States championship and a runner-up finish in the Little League World Series.
