Cypress Federal edged Lunada Bay 1-0 in the opening round of the Southern California Divisional Tournament, then exploded for 41 runs over the next three games to claim its second divisional title of the 1990s. Like the 1990 Cypress all-star team, the 1998 club won the West Region Tournament and advanced to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Following its win over Lunada Bay, Cypress routed El Monte American 16-1 to set up a meeting with Rancho Cucamonga Vineyard in the winner's bracket finals. Vineyard advanced with victories over Yorba Linda Yorba Hills (6-4) and San Bernardino Newmark (5-1).
Cypress built an early 10-0 lead against Vineyard, and held on for a 14-6 victory. Brian Pepperdine's first inning home run started the onslaught, and an six-run fourth inning rally increased the bulge to 10-0. Four Cypress errors in the bottom of the fourth inning allowed Vineyard to slice the deficit to 10-5, but centerfielder Pat Cassa ended the inning by throwing out a runner trying to score from second on a base hit. Cypress, which pounded out 10 hits and scored in five of the game's six innings, then re-built its lead and advanced to the championship game.
Vineyard dropped to the loser's bracket following its loss to Cypress Federal, but the Rancho Cucamonga club had more immediate concerns: three players, including the winning pitchers in their two divisional tournament victories, left the squad immediately following the Cypress loss to compete for the Rancho Cucamonga Dodgers in the American Amateur Baseball Congress World Series in Puerto Rico. Cucamonga had lost one player to a family vacation prior to the start of the divisional tournament, and would only regain its missing players if the club advanced to the Western Region Tournament.
Vineyard was able to advance to the divisional tournament title game by defeating El Monte in the loser's bracket finals, but Cypress left little doubt as to the outcome of the title game by scoring eight runs before Vineyard came to bat in the first inning. Cypress loaded the bases with no outs to start the game, then two-run doubles by Pepperdine and Alex Alba staked the District 29 champions to a 4-0 lead. After an error plated another run, Cassa belted a three-run homer to give Cypress an insurmountable 8-0 lead. Zach Wingo added a late homer for Cypress, and Matt Swims and Wingo combined on a three-hitter. Vineyard finished the game with only nine players, as their starting pitcher in the title game was taken to a local hospital as a precaution after a second inning line drive deflected off of his glove and hit him in the head.
Cypress Federal went on to rally past Woodinville West (Washington) in the Western Region championship game before finishing 1-2 in the U.S. pool at the World Series.
