Summary:
Garrett Cox hit a pair of championship game home runs as his McAllister Park American Little League all-star team defeated South Brownsville Little League 3-1 at the Texas West championship tournament in Waco.
The win gave the San Antonio-based league its second-ever Texas championship in the major baseball division. McAllister Park, which split into American and National charters in the mid-1990s, won a statewide Texas crown in 1987.
McAllister Park won three games in the double-elimination tournament, including two against South Brownsville. The District 19 champions edged South Brownsville 3-2 in the tournament's opening round. Ethan Catalani paced McAllister Park's offense with a pair of hits in support of winning pitcher Hunter Bookout. McAllister Park then edged Fort Worth's University Little League 7-6 to reach the championship game.
South Brownsville rebounded from its opening round loss with a pair of wins, and reached the championship game for the first time in the league's history. The Rio Grande Valley squad -- which returned six players from its 2003 Section 4 championship team -- eliminated Lubbock Western 9-5 and gained a title game berth with a 4-3 win over University. Juan Benavides pitched a complete game and doubled twice in the win over the Fort Worth-based club.
Cox's home runs paced the McAllister Park offense in the championship game, while pitchers Brad Hall and Jordan Mengle combined to allow only one run. Margarito Trevino homered for South Brownsville.
McAllister Park American finished first in its pool at the Southwestern Region tournament in Waco before falling to eventual runner-up Bryant Athletic Little League (Arkansas) 12-5 in the semifinal round.
