Utah State Tournament

NOTE: This tournament was held July 11, 1997 through July 21, 1997.
Tournament Results:
Partial results; three teams remain from the original 13-team field:
Winner's Bracket Final (Tuesday, July 15):
NOTE: Taylorsville led Dixie 8-4 in the top of the fifth inning of the first championship series game on Saturday, July 19, but inserted a pitcher into the game who had thrown in the team’s most recent game on July 15 against Enterprise. Little League rules at the time prevented pitchers from throwing in consecutive games in the same tournament, though the rules distributed to teams for the tournament indicated at the top that pitchers could not pitch on consecutive days, and deeper in the rulebook text, indicated that they cannot pitch in consecutive games. Dixie protested the game, and Little League’s tournament committee subsequently awarded Dixie the forfeit win.
Taylorsville preferred that the second championship series game be played immediately following the protest. This was possible with the agreement of both teams and the region office, but Dixie’s coach declined, citing both a bias against doubleheaders and that his likely pitcher for the second game had injured his ankle in the first championship series game and was not yet ready to participate if the game was played immediately. Instead, Taylorsville made the 225-mile trip home, and returned again two days later for the final game.
