Naperville American survived a pre-game scare when two team vans carrying players and coaches to the championship game were forced into a ditch by a pickup truck that swerved into their lane, and the Americans then regrouped to soundly defeat Rochelle for the state title. Ryan Renn scattered three hits and struck out ten to pick up the victory, and Naperville American snapped a 1-1 tie with a five run fifth inning rally. Renn, Pat Brusveen, and Craig Brookes each delivered RBI hits in the inning.
Rochelle had forced a second title game by defeating Naperville 2-1 in the first championship game. Adam Tobler provided the offense with a pair of solo home runs, including the game winner in the bottom of the sixth inning, while Joe Rice threw a four-hitter.
In the winner's bracket finals, Beardstown led Naperville 2-1 after five innings, but the Americans rallied for seven sixth inning runs and then held off a late Beardstown rally. Naperville took the lead on Ryan Pollard's bases-loaded single, and Tumilty later added a three-run homer. The Americans advanced despite issuing 10 walks and committing three errors.
Naperville American finished third in its pool at the Central Region Tournament in Indianapolis. Naperville American, Baxter Springs (KS), and Dyer (IN) all finished with 4-1 records in pool competition. Dyer won the tiebreaker (fewest runs allowed per defensive inning against all opponents) and advanced to the title game and ultimately the Little League World Series. Naperville American had handed Dyer its only loss in pool competition by defeating the Indiana champions 6-1 earlier in the tournament. A majority of Naperville American's players were also members of the 1995 Naperville American team that won the Illinois state tournament in the 9-10 year old division.
