Summary:

For the first time in its nine tournament games, Westfield North did not have to rally for its title-game victory -- but it still wasn't easy. Westfield pitcher Mike Mastroianni allowed five hits and issued six walks, but Leicester stranded ten baserunners as Westfield North picked up the 4-1 win. Westfield took a 2-0 lead in the second when Chris Martin -- the ninth place hitter in the batting order -- punched a two-run single up to middle. Second baseman Norm Burns and Mastroianni added RBI singles in the fourth. In Westfield North's semifinal meeting with Billerica, losing pitcher Mike Glavine held Westfield hitless for 4-2/3 innings before consecutive singles by Jeff Matthews, Dave Burque, Burns, and Mastroianni plated three runs and erased a 2-0 Billerica lead. Lambert struck out nine while earning the semifinal victory. Westfield North became the first Hamden County team to win a Massachusetts state title.
