NOTE: 1961 marked the first year in which Japan teams competed in the international tournament. Through 1960, the Hawaii state champion advanced directly to the Little League World Series as the Pacific Region champion.

Little League officials in Japan, most of whom were members of the U.S. military stationed in Japan, held a fundraising drive in the months leading up to the Pacific Region tournament that raised ¥4,000,000 ($13,000) to fund transportation for the winning team to travel to Hawaii for the region championship. Misawa’s team was comprised of children of American military personnel, while most Hilo players were of Japanese heritage.

Beginning in 1962, Hawaii competed in the Western Region playoff structure.
